Children learn from an early age that some people are considered good and others bad; that white is good, and that black is bad. The results of this study and other evidence presented by Drs. Clark, led to the Supreme Court ruling “Brown vs the Board of Education”. This led to school desegregation, however the manner in which it took place is not considered effective, as children were removed from their neighborhoods to attend school, which led to the inability to partake in after school and other activities during the week and weekends and sharpened differences, rather than leading to integration. The Civil Rights actions and acts of the 1960’s fueled the need for change amidst great hate of difference. As noted by the divisive actions of the 45th President, as movements for equality and equity are being fought, so are the movements to foment “othering”.

As we cover the biological, psychological, sociological bases of behavior in this class, you are to consider several concepts as to the cause of behavior. Nature versus Nurture is now thought of as Nature and Nurture. Genetics provides a level of probability of genes which may or not be expressed during one’s life. Environment in the womb (hormones, proteins, bacteria, and other substances may play a role), as well as the environment from delivery and beyond. Family, culture, community, as well as the foods, medications, toxins, opportunities presented, interacting with one’s interests all interact to form an individual. There are many theories of development. During this course, we will be delving into the social constructs and other influences which have affected attitude and behavior towards girls and women, and also of gender, race, social class, and other categories of difference.

This TEDx Talk, “The Mask of Masculinity”, provides thoughtful consideration of the behavioral forces shaping male behavior from childhood on (blue is for boys; be a man; don’t cry…). It is important to think of the messages to which one is exposed, as they are often assumed to be true and will affect the way in which we view and judge one another, as well as ourselves. There are feedback loops among our belief systems and our biological systems. This documentary provides a light into some of the effects which may result.

Watch these videos and read the information on Drs. Kenneth and Mamie Clark and the Interview of Dr. Bryan Kolb on Behavior and Brain Plasticity. Read and answer the questions below and submit your report by Tuesday Nov 16th, 2021. Answer the questions following the guidelines below.

Think of your own life, or that of someone you personally know, and the messages they received and/or assumed as they grew up, including regarding masculinity (or femininity).

In the first paragraph of your report, develop the concepts which you will further explain regarding the example you will develop in the second question. (Factual answers based upon the material in this assignment and the textbook, and other valid source materials; third-person formal tone and language)
In subsequent paragraphs, from a personal knowledge example develop the effects of gender role expectations on the life (assumptions, expectations, interactions, behaviors, emotions and their consequences) on the individual.
One often has an “external face” and “internal emotions;” develop these in your example.
Share any individuals who provided support; explain the actions and outcomes (provide at least one specific example)
Share any suggestions for updating expectations, explaining/educating adults, and children, of the importance of being oneself for health and development.
Make suggestions that would have made the process of development easier.
There are numerous documentaries regarding the role of social construct, cultural expectations, peer pressure and other environmental influences on the behaviors of women. All persons, regardless of sex or gender, are strongly influenced by social pressures. These influences also affect brain development through the lifespan. There is much written as to “male brain” and “female brain”. Influences and pressures from nature and nurture affects brain development, resulting in physiological effects on development (cellular differentiation, specialization, including affecting the processes of myelination, synaptogenesis, and pruning) having an effect on the amount of cortical “real estate” allocated toward each of the senses and subsequent directions of one’s interests, including social, family, career and personality traits which are attributed to differences in ‘male” and “female” brains. Address the pressures which affect the activities one participates as a child, teen, adult, such as play, sports, social media, career paths (art, music, dance, sports, doctor, lawyer, teacher, communication, marketing, advertising). How may an activity affect brain growth over time? How does being told to do something one is not interested in pursuing affect one’s emotions? How may this affect one’s actions? Support your answers. (Minimum 250 words)
Using a 100 points scale, address the degree to which you believe that development of “male” brains and “female” brains are affected by nature as opposed to nurture. Support your answer. (Minimum 100 words)
Then you may express any additional closing messages in the final paragraph.

The report should be at least two (2) pages in length. Arial Font size 12; double spaced. Paragraph format (indent paragraphs 0.5″). Submit (attach pdf, doc, docx or rtf documents only) within this assignment no later than Nov 16th 9:59 pm (late reports will not be graded). The report will earn up to fifty (50) points. Remember to type your name on the top left of the first page of your report.

This is a classic discussion which clearly presents the messages girls receive which play a role in girls and women being dissatisfied with their bodies and yet are being sold on products and attitudes that imply sexualization as a goal.
