Students will be asked to critically reflect on the state of
the sport industry in the twenty-first century. Specifically, I’m asking students to think about
the relations between the sport industry and the critical issues of our times (i.e., the global
environmental crisis; the COVID-19 pandemic; racism/racial discrimination; sexism/gender
discrimination; labor exploitation; etc. etc.). I’m also asking students to think about the issue of
corporate social responsibility (CSR) and the various ways sports organizations market
themselves as socially and environmentally responsible.

Just like the first and second course essays, your third course essay should be a fully contextual
essay. That is to say, the essay should contextualize the sports industry and CSR activities in
the industry by discussing the ways in which historical processes (late capitalism,
neoliberalism, postmodernity) are impacting the industry as well as attempts to be socially
and environmentally responsible.

In the essay, address the following questions:
• What do you believe are the key social/environmental issues currently impacting the
sport industry? How are these issues impacting the industry, sporting events, and
workers/athletic laborers? Are these issues being fueled/exacerbated by historical
processes like late capitalism, neoliberalism, and/or postmodernity?
o For this, I would focus on just one or two major social/environmental issues
• To what extent have sport organizations been social and environmentally
“irresponsible”? How have sports organizations attempted to address social and
environmental issues through corporate social responsibility? How have these instances
of CSR in the sport industry been shaped/impacted by historical processes?
• What should the sport industry look like in the twenty-first century, if it is to become
more socially and environmentally responsible? To put it another way, what do you
think needs to happen in the sport industry (i.e., what forms of CSR is still needed) in
order to make the industry more socially and environmentally responsible?

Your essay should include your own proposal for a CSR initiative for a sports organization,
including a discussion of the specific ways that you would address concerns related to both
consumers and communities. You can discuss your own proposal for a CSR initiative in the
conclusion of your essay.
