Assignment Guidelines
You will be developing a research-based Philosophy of Education which will reflect your own
thoughts about schools, and goals for teaching and learning. This will be created from reflection of
topics we discussed in class as well as your own research into specific topics.
You will be required to access at least three relevant research articles (from peer-reviewed
scholarly journals in the field of education) to support various sections of this paper (noted below.)
The research you do should support your own goals by making connections between your own
personal beliefs about teaching and learning and what the research states about effective teaching.
For example, if one of your goals is to include a technology rich environment, you must cite
research that supports the benefits of the use of technology in the classroom. This is just an
example; you will be defining your own beliefs and goals. Some suggestions for research are
highlighted below in sections 2 and 3. You may certainly look beyond these suggested topics.
Your Educational Philosophy research paper must have the following three components:
1. About Me (No supporting research required)
Selected personal information about yourself. Tell your story, be creative!
2. Educational Philosophy (research required)
Your philosophy must address the following:
A. Values (e.g. your teaching philosophy, an explanation of how you see yourself in relation
to the educational philosophies presented in class, key dispositions and what motivates
you to teach)
B. Roles (e.g. your desired grade level and subject area, your teaching style, and how you
see yourself using strategies like classroom flipping and the multiple intelligences to
maximize learning)
C. Goals (e.g. your personal goals, goals for students, desired learning outcomes, and how
you will incorporate elements like diversity, social justice, and technology into your
learning environment
Your philosophy is reflective in nature and may change over time. Write this from your heart and
dream about how you hope you see yourself as a classroom teacher
3. Depiction of a Classroom Environment (research required)
Thoroughly describe/depict a classroom environment that you would set up for your chosen grade
level and any particular subject area lesson. Be sure to address more than just the physical
environment, i.e. different learning styles, diversity, the climate of the classroom, the use of
technology, the roles of your students, etc.
Your paper must be written in APA format and should include a minimum of 6 pages (not including
Title or reference page) Each of the three sections should be about 1-3 pages.
Guidelines:
Your paper should be typed and double-spaced on standard-sized paper (8.5″ x 11″), with 1″
margins on all sides. You should use a clear font that is highly readable. APA recommends using 12
pt. Times New Roman font.
Include a page header (also known as the “running head”) at the top of every page. To create a
page header/running head, insert page numbers flush right. Then type “TITLE OF YOUR PAPER”
in the header flush left using all capital letters. The running head is a shortened version of your
paper’s title and cannot exceed 50 characters including spacing and punctuation
