The Covid-BHFE will be about 11 pages long. The goal, as mentioned before, will to have selected ten item from early American history that you have deemed the most significant or important. You will have already brainstormed a list on the Discussion Boards, in categories, and may use items from your list or other people’s lists as you see fit. The rules for selection from the first instruction still hold. (see: BHFE Mini (Covid-Style!))
FORMAT
The paper will be double spaced in a standard 12 point font (Arial or Geneva are nice ones). As long as you are using material from the lectures and the book there are no need for citations unless you are directly quoting from the book, in which case you should use a simple parenthetical citation like: “This is a quote” (p. 325) If you use outside materials, you need to cite them using Chicago Manual of Style format. Since this is not a formal research paper I will not be unkind if you get the format a little mixed up, but you must show where you got your work from in order to not be considered plagiarizing. STRUCTURE
INTRODUCTION (10 points): Your introduction will have two components: An introductory paragraph introducing the paper which LISTS ALL OF YOUR TOP TEN ITEMS, and then a CATEGORICAL ANALYSIS. The analysis is at the heart of the paper. In it, you are going to look at the items you chose and see which categories you chose them from. You will also look at what categories you did NOT choose any from. What does your choice of categories, what kinds of things you chose, and what kinds of things you left out tell you about what you consider “important” about history? Does it match what you thought your interests already are so it matches things you like, or did you discover something surprising? You may also discuss if there were categories other students mentioned in the discussion boards you didn’t even think about, and maybe discuss why those categories didn’t occur to you or never seemed as important. This is your chance to really think about why do you look at the world the way you do!
EACH INDIVIDUAL ITEM OF YOUR TOP TEN (9 points each): You will start each new item you selected by making a BOLDFACE name of what you selected and centering it. The paragraphs that follow should do the following things: DESCRIBE who / what the person / place / or thing you chose was, and EXPLAIN THE HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE TO AMERICAN HISTORY. 4 points are allocated for the description, 5 points for the significance. When discussing the significance, make sure to focus on what it did to change / alter / impact United States history. It is possible to choose items from before the U.S. was founded, but as always make sure to explain why it was so important it was in the top ten of the millions of other possible choices. Please note that because describing significance can sometimes only take a sentence or two, it is okay for that part to be shorter and still receive full credit for significance. Each individual item should be about a page in length.
