PHI 111 final essay prompt
Please outline and compare utilitarianism and deontology. To do so you will
need to assume that naturalism is the case and consider each position based on
the arguments given. Be sure to follow Rapoport’s rules, to use thought experiments
to consider each position, and to state any agreement, interest, or
disagreement in third-person terms. Also be sure to follow any feedback
suggestions from your midterm. Be sure to position yourself in relation to the
theories considered, you may accept either theory, develop a compromise between
the two, or reject both, but you must show your reasoning and base your
position on argumentation.
You will be evaluated using the following criteria:
1. Structure: meets minimum word count, uses Rapoport’s Rules (either 1-3 or
1-4, depending on the prompt) in the correct order
2. Content: displays comprehension of the main points from the relevant
articles and addresses common objections. Any objections or points of agreement
are presented with intellectual humility and clearly explained as based on
objections to the reasoning being used. Any claims made are supported by the
evidence provided.
3. Philosophical tools: Uses examples, metaphors and analogies, and/or any
other philosophical tools that we have studied to clarify the points being
made. Makes mention of relevant branches of philosophy where relevant.
4. Organization: The order is developed and sustained within and across and
within paragraphs using transitional devices including introduction and
conclusion.
