We invite you to consider contemporary policy approaches and their justifications by thinking across the issues of criminal justice reform and the racial wealth gap.

Write a paper in which you perform a close reading of two course readings––one on criminal justice reform and one on the racial wealth gap–– and expound upon the authors’ framing of each issue. Begin by clearly indicating the two readings you have chosen in your introduction. Provide a discussion of each text with specific attention to the structure, argument, and evidence the authors use to make their case. What is it that each author has to say about criminal justice reform or the racial wealth gap? Next, with your own original analysis, we invite you to think beyond modules and put the authors in conversation with each other as you discuss where their arguments converge and diverge. Finally, choose one manifestation of social injustice that arises at the intersection of mass incarceration and the racial wealth disparity and spend some time discussing the role of public policy in maintaining or dismantling that issue.

In your essay, please consider one or more of the following groups of questions:

What are the ways the criminal justice system and the racial wealth gap shape and reinforce each other? Do you think the relationship is correlational, causal, is there a common root cause, or are they unrelated entirely? Use evidence to support your argument.
Which interest groups are involved in each issue? How do their interests support or conflict with the interests of another group? Where are there opportunities for coalition building?
What is public opinion on the issues? How has public opinion been used to justify or resist government-led policy action regarding these issues? Cite relevant polls or studies and analyze their findings. Who might agree or disagree with the proposed solution(s) to these issues?
