Whistleblowing is an informal word used to describe the exposure of
wrongdoing in an organization. It can include a vast of things such as
illegal or fraudulent activities, mismanagement of funds, health or
safety risks, abuse of authority, danger to public health or safety. The
enaction of the False Claims Act of 1863 helps prevent scams against
the federal government regarding frauds costing the U.S. Treasury
millions of dollars (Pozgar, 2021).
OSHA oversees and enforces the Whistleblower Protection Program with
over 20 whistleblower statutes protecting employees from retaliation for
reporting violations of various workplace safety and health, airline,
commercial motor carrier, consumer product, environmental, financial
reform, food safety, health insurance reform, motor vehicle safety,
nuclear, pipeline, public transportation agency, railroad, maritime,
securities, tax, antitrust, and anti-money laundering laws and for
engaging in other related protected activities. OSHA specifically
states, “an employer cannot take an adverse action against employees,
such as: firing or laying off, demoting, denying overtime or promotion,
or reducing pay or hours, for engaging in activities protected by OSHA’s
whistleblower laws” (Occupational Safety & Health Administration,
2021, para 2). The whistleblower laws that OSHA imposes forbid employers
from retaliating in a hostile fashion toward employees for engaging in
activities protected under those laws.
Taking on the role of a whistleblower can be a challenging situation.
In today’s politically stressed and inflammatory society, if the
individual is not part of the “in crowd” political class, that person’s
life can be miserable. For example, President Trump had so many
whistleblowers in his administration come forward because of “his power
grab.” He was impeached on two different accounts but found not guilty.
Now look at the current administration who has failed the American
people time and again. Where are the whistleblowers exposing the corrupt
practices in this administration?

A whistleblower is a person, usually an employee, who exposes
information or activity within a private, public, or government
organization that is deemed illegal, illicit, unsafe, fraud, or abuse of
taxpayer funds. First, whistleblowers typically are current or former
employees with direct, credible information about wrongdoing that they
became aware of while on the job. Second, the concerns are serious and
their disclosures reveal changes that must be made according to the law
or in protection of the public interest. It is most difficult to be a
whistle-blower living in constant fear of retaliation or fear of losing
your job. The most common examples of whistleblowing are price fixing,
over-billing or billing for services not performed, concealing safety
concerns or violations, and false certifications by educational
institutions or certifying agencies. Health care Fraud is the most
common whistleblower. The “godfather of the defense movement” is what
some people call A. Ernest Fitzgerald, a long-time government employee
and government whistleblower. In 1968, Fitzgerald reported a $2.3
billion cost overrun involving the Lockheed C-5 transport aircraft.
