EQUIPMENT:

Total Station (TS), Tripod, Prism pole, Field Book

OBJECTIVE:

To familiarize the student with the procedure of setting up, leveling, and operating a total station.

DIRECTIONS:

1.Take the equipment issued to you over to the designated area and set up over a temporary traverse point. Position the tripod so that the legs will not coincide with where the observer needs to stand. Enter the temperature, pressure, and humidity and level the TS. Measure and record the instrument height(IH). Assume an elevation at this point of 100.00’. 2.Have one group member hold the prism rod on a temporary BS point. Put the point of the rod into the dip in the PK nail. Make sure prism rod is plumb (vertically level) by centering the level bubble. Set the height of the prism over the mark at 5.00’, using the pole’s graduated scale to the nearest division. Record the rod height in the field book. 3.The instrument man sets orientation by aiming the TS at the BS and zeros the horizontal angle reading, and then measures the horizontal distance. Click “set’ to set orientation. Take another reading, and record the following in the field book:

a. Horizontal distance (HD)

b. Vertical(V)and horizontal (HZ) angles

c. Elevation of point (Elev)

d. Rod Height (HR)

e. Observer’s name (instrument man)

4.The rodman then holds the rod over another arbitrary point. The instrument man turns the TS from the BS to this point, takes a reading, and records above stated measurements. Each group member shall take 2measurements at random but distinguishable locations with the rod, with one reading having a vertical angle less than 90 degrees and one with a vertical angle greater than 90 degrees. Each group member must also hold the rod at some point during the lab. Record all information listed above for each point.

5.The observer will then turn back to the original point that the zero horizontal angle was set and reads the measurement again. It will probably NOT be 0º 00’ 00”. This is to be expected. There is error in resetting up on the point, error in turning the angle and the plumbness of the rod. Record this backsight check as the final entry in your field book.

COMPUTATIONS:

For each individual point, draw a neat and clearly annotated sketch, in profile view. Below each sketch, calculate the elevation at the base of the rod, and compare, using percent error, with the value calculated by the instrument.

Elevation at point = Elev at TS point + IH + HDtan(V-90o)-HR

Elevation at point = Elev at TS point + IH -HDtan(90o-V)-HR

Deliverables (individual lab report): Report shall include a clearly labelled and neatly drawn sketch for each measurement as well as calculations. A full written report is not required.
