A brief history on public relations (PR), the United States shifted to a consumer-oriented, which promoted the development of new products and services as people moved to cities to find work. During this transformation, advertising began to grow through campaigning in person and newspaper advertisements ads which linked the attention to customers and new products. PR began in part to help businesses fend off increased scrutiny from the muckraking journalists and emerging labor unions of the time. Edward Bernays and Barnum, Lee both found ways to target the audience by using a strategic communications process that builds a relationship between these organizations and the public. Example: Bernays was hired by the American Tobacco Company to develop a campaign to make smoking more publicly acceptable for women. This symbolism suggests “Women’s Rights” which is woman’s independence from men. As a result, the communications process, women were allowed to enter men-only smoking rooms in New York theaters. Lee’s reputation for creating a crisis team also helped the public when it came to decision-making. (“Early Developments in Public Relations,” n.d.). In my opinion, the past efforts of Lee, and Bernays contributed strength to our present-day public relations practitioner because we still utilize the same ammo or techniques, but it seems a little outdated or too good to be true. The information given to the public is only what people want to hear and not the full truth. Where I’m currently employed we had a police officer on social media just recently saying racial slurs and getting into a person’s face. The public immediately started videotaping the incident on their phones which of course went viral. The public didn’t record what truly expired therefore our agency received a bad reputation. Is our agency going to just let the incident go or is our agency’s PR going to make an announcement to explain what happened? Who knows? This isolated incident goes to show our future isn’t promising and may cause the public to retaliate against police officers.
