Sweatshops, Essay Example

Prior to reading this article, my opinion of sweatshops is that they are essentially wrong, although they are prevalent within the structure of the world economy.  Some argue that their presence is necessary, as they provide jobs to the people in these countries, allowing them to develop.  However, this is not something that I agree with.  While these businesses might provide income, it would seem that those who run the businesses have a moral responsibility to pay a living wage.

In this way, I disagree with the idea that these sweatshops are a vital part of the global economy.  In examining and considering the impact of globalization on the creation of these organizations, it becomes evident that they arise due to the desire for businesses to meet their bottom lines.  However, there should be at least some small amount of responsibility associated with running these companies.  This, as the article indicates, demonstrates the difference between how people in the east and west think about the moral responsibility of these businesses.

If I were the CEO of a corporation, I would not consider using sweatshops as part of my strategy.  In explaining the reason for this, it is necessary to understand how the corporate and social responsibility has an effect on the ultimate end for stakeholders.  It is important to understand the impact that these decisions have on the overall well-being of the company.  In taking this into account, the responsibility of the company to both the shareholders and the public should be considered.

After reading the article, my impression of how I regard sweatshops did somewhat change.  However, this is more related to having an open mind than actually being okay with the idea of a sweatshop.  While in my own mind, it seems that these practices are immoral, the article indicates that the people who work at them actually have profound regard for them. This is due to the opportunity that they provide.  This should be taken into account when thinking about the ethics of sweatshops and the moral responsibility of businesses.  These people have their own opinions about the need for these opportunities.
