Next we write a 3-5 sentence summary of the article. Followed by a 3-5 sentence critique of the strengths and weakness.

Ancell, Bruns, and Chitiyo evaluate the evidence surrounding father involvement in early childhood programs. They note that there are positive outcomes associated for both the fathers and the children when fathers are interacting with their children such as better languages outcomes for the children and fathers tend to feel more confident and have a higher opinion of themselves. Ancell notes there a number of programs that have tried to involve fathers with varying success including Head Start’s Fatherhood Initiative. Additionally, Ancell notes there are several specific strategies that can be useful including: creating father friendly activities, listening to feedback from fathering programs, and hiring male providers.

While Ancell, Bruns, and Chitiyo note the strengths of the outcomes for fathers and children, there is a lack of information regarding how to make these programs work or how they need to be different for different communities. While they point to broad strokes around what good programs would look like, the lack of solid evidence or who these programs work for. More information is needed about how these programs work and programs that do not work in order to justify some of these beliefs.
