End with a conclusion in which you summarize the key information and arguments you have

You should use and cite 6-10 reliable sources in your paper. (More is fine). At least five of these should be sources that you and your group found through your own research. At least one should be an assigned reading, podcast or video from the syllabus.

Your paper should be 1250-2000 words (5-7 pages, double spaced, not including cover page, any

images, or bibliography).

It should be written in Times New Roman font with standard margins.

What is the problem? Why is it a problem of inequity for students from diverse backgrounds or situations? (If someone said to you, “I see that this is a problem, but why is it a problem of inequity?” how would you respond?)

Explain the situation and context. Show substantial evidence that the problem exists. Focus on at least two NYC public schools that are primarily affected by the problem, or illustrate the problem. Use data and other evidence to describe and explain the problem. (Here you might think about how you would describe and explain the problem and the situation to someone visiting from another city).You may use maps, photographs or other information.

What are the causes of the problem? How did this problem come to exist? Consider and discuss the historical roots of the problem, and current laws or policies that help to create the problem. Be sure to explain the causes accurately. Keep in mind the possibility that the problem may be an intended or unintended consequence of historical cause, law or policy.

Who is actively trying to solve this problem? Identify and describe an organization (or group) that is advocating for a specific solution to the problem. Be sure to identify at least one prominent member of that group (and you may want to discuss more than one). Explain who they are, their relationship to the issue, and how they are involved in trying to solve it. You may find it interesting and enjoyable to look for youth activists, but you can also look at adults.

What is the solution this group (and the individuals in it) has proposed? What will be involved in implementing it – meaning, who would do what? (For example, would it involve changing a law, starting a new program, getting more funding – and if so, from where?). How is it meant to solve the problem?

Who disagrees with this solution? Identify and describe at least one organization or group that disagrees with the advocacy group you have researched, and with their proposed solution. This may

be:

a group that disagrees about the nature of the problem and directly opposes the solution,

an individual or group that believes their proposed solution is not feasible or may have other negative consequences, OR

a group that has only a somewhat different understanding of the problem and alternate solution to propose.

Explain that group’s position thoroughly.

What is happening with this proposed solution right now? Is it being implemented? If so, where and how? If not, is it currently under active consideration by any educational or political leaders?
