I. Topic

For the final essay there are three options for the topic. Choose one:

Option A: Yourself

Reflect about your own behavior, and about how it has consequences for social justice in relation to race and gender. If you choose this option, find some specific behavior of your own that, upon reflection, you recognize as promoting social injustice in relation to race or gender. That behavior will be your topic.

Option B: Your Community

Consider your local community—family, friends, religion, neighborhood, work, etc.—and think about how their practices have consequences for social justice in relation to race and gender. If you choose this option, find some specific community practice that you believe promotes social injustice in relation to race or gender. That practice will be your topic.

Option C: Your Government

Consider the actions of your government—making and enforcing laws, providing services, selecting leaders, etc.—and think about how they have consequences for social justice in relation to race and gender. If you choose this option, find some specific government activity that you believe promotes social injustice in relation to race or gender. That activity will be your topic.

[Note: your topic should not be one that was the main subject of any course reading (not: racial profiling, affirmative action, reparations, income inequality, medical inequality, hate speech, or misidentifying). It must be a separate topic that you find on your own.]

II. Procedure

Whatever your topic, your essay must accomplish the following:

Describe the behavior/practice/activity, making sure to highlight how it impacts people in relation to their race or gender.

Use what you’ve learned about social justice from course readings to explain how (or argue that) the behavior/practice/activity promotes social injustice relating to race or gender.

Explain what must be done to correct the injustice. That is, explain how you, your community, or your government should correct its behavior/practice/activity and, using what you’ve learned in the course, explain how the new behavior/practice/activity meets the requirements of social justice.

III. Format

The essay may be any length you see fit, so long as it fully accomplishes the tasks established in the procedure (which would be hard to accomplish in under 3-4 pages). It should be in 12-pt font, double-spaced, with standard margins.
