Based of this case study of ADHD for MADDOX
Maddox
is a 6 year old boy whose ethnicity is white. He is healthy and has no current
medical issues. Maddox is currently not taking any medications. He currently
lives with his mom. His parents are divorced but he doesn’t see his father as
much as he’s supposed to. He has a younger brother who is only 3 months old.
Both parents did not attend collage but only the father graduated high school.
Father has a criminal record, but currently has a great job at a car
dealership. There is an extended family history of Attention
Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) with both mother and father having the
same issue, mental health concerns as well as academic excellence.
Maddox
describes difficulties with focusing, and sitting still in class. He recognizes
that he constantly needs to be moving. He has difficulty sustaining his
attention at school. His parents and teacher indicate that Maddox is restless,
constantly running around and breaking things because he is excited or just
full of energy. Often needs reminders to stay on task, and to stop talking.
Maddox’s teacher often indicates that he is interrupting the class, not in his
seat, moving around, or talking to his peers. She states Maddox is very smart,
but has no drive to do his work or homework, but can ace a test whenever.
Maddox’s
family also reports that he gets upset easily when he does not receive
recognition or feels nobody is paying attention to him, with his mom having a
newborn he feels she doesn’t pay attention to him so he acts out even more to
get her attention. His mother reports difficulties at home with following
routines and remembering instructions. She gets frustrated and usually ends up
giving into Maddox because she is stressed and cannot get him to settle down
without breaking things.
To assess Maddox’s Attention
Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) for effective intervention, the help of
other parties such as the parents and teachers is an important factor (Sayal et al., 2018). The family
members will be useful to give the child’s symptoms, period, and effect of ADHD
to the family and friends. An effective way to diagnose requires more time of
not less than six months after the child has shown symptoms of hyperactivity and
inattention, by comparing the signs with those of other children.
One of the methods of assessing the Maddox
issue is by using a medical exam. Physical exams are essential in enhancing the
physical interaction of the patient and the doctor. The physical exams will be
useful in providing information about the patient’s history, signs and symptoms
and the general appearance of Maddox. ADHD for children might be diagnosed at 4
to 18 years. Detecting ADHD among children younger than the age of 5 is not
easy, yet the children might be experiencing the problem. However, Leahy (2018) suggested that some
children might display symptoms that resemble ADHD as a result of family-related
issues such as divorce or moving to a new place. However, there are three types
of ADHD that I was able to identify in Maddox; the hyperactive or impulsive
type, Inattentive and the combined symptoms for both conditions. The symptoms
showed the signs of a chronic condition that is left unaddressed might affect
the child to other stages of development. For instance, it was hard for Maddox
to focus on a certain subject for a long period of time and he was always
fidgeting while when talking to him.
The teachers’ input is necessary for
assessing the issue of Maddox and even progress after being subjected to
treatment. Teachers are expected to monitor the child’s level of attention in
the classroom, whether the child is observing the prescription and the overall
behavioral pattern of the child (Ahmann
et al., 2017). The teachers can create a routine for Maddox to follow
when at school and indicate the level of improvements in adhering to the set
routine. As a result, Maddox would be able to adjust his focus, especially
during class, to maintain his records of improvement.
The parents are also important when
assessing the issue of Maddox. The family act as the basic socializing aspect
for Maddox. As a result, they understand the behavioral pattern of their child
which is a diagnosis for ADHD. The parents can help in socializing their child with
family members and friends by using a routine for all activities. The parents
can also update the healthcare center about any necessary areas of concern and
the progress of the patient.
Instrument
Used
For assessing the condition of Maddox,
Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL/6-18) was identified and used as the most
effective tool. “The Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL/6-18) is used to assess
children of 6-8 years” (Hartini et
al., 2016). The tool is used to identify possible disorders which are
either internal or external. The instrument contains a checklist of up to 120
questions. The scale is used in assessing symptoms of anxiety, depression,
attention problems and social problems. Using ADHD is effective in the case of Maddox
since it can be used by teachers, parents and other relevant groups such as
youth to assess the condition of the patient. The Child Behavior Checklist
(CBCL/6-18) comprises a problem behavior and social competence scale (Hartini et al., 2016). The
behavioral scale is used by healthcare givers to establish the response of
patients in terms of anxiety, depression, thought process, somatic complaints
and attention issues by grouping them into externalized or internalized
behaviors. The problems are summed up and computed to establish the score. On
the other hand, the social competence scale is used by teachers and parents to provide
a report on a child’s involvement in social activities, hobbies and academic
performance.
Recommendations
Helping a child experiencing ADHD is the
responsibility of all parties involved in the social life of the child,
including the parents and teachers. For instance, the teachers and parents
should set a routine for Maddox to follow when at home and school. They should
set goals that for him to accomplish within the routine, which should be
accompanied by rewards as a motivating factor. Rewards would help draw the attention
of the child from external influences and focus on their routine.
Maddox’s most useful
treatment procedure would be special education programs, drug treatment, and
employing psychological measures. The combination of behavioral therapy and
monitoring and drug treatment can be used by the doctors, parents and teachers
to help Maddox in his inattention and hyperactivity. Using psychostimulant
drugs for children is effective in addressing the issue. ADHD medicines are
available in terms of and vary in their acting effect from short-acting to long-acting.
The patient should follow the doctor’s prescription when administering the
drugs. The drugs might have side effects that differ with patients but are
considered mild and long-lasting.
Furthermore, since Maddox
experiences a chronic condition, it is advisable for their parents to take them
to schools that accommodate ADHD patients. As a result, Maddox will spend
enough time with the professionals who understand the condition and necessary
measures to address the condition.
In the case of Maddox, it
was evident that the psychological issue of the patient was Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity
Disorder (ADHD). The disorder is believed to begin in childhood and can occur
until adulthood for some patients. Using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual
of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) proves to impact children, hence ensuring they get
any necessary help throughout their lives.
