Leaders in the health information management field are responsible for important hospital operations. Data analysis, patient care, and maintaining compliance
are all processes and policies that leadership must maintain and even sometimes create. These procedures must apply to a variety of different professions within
the hospital, not just health information management, as every role within the hospital works with health information in different ways. In addition, developing
methods for training employees, and enacting those methods, is of paramount importance in order to accommodate the variety of roles that must be trained.
For your final project, imagine you are the administrator of the health information department in a hospital with some challenging problems that you need to
find solutions for. You will demonstrate your leadership by developing procedures and policies created to address problems you identified.
In this assignment, you will demonstrate your mastery of the following course outcomes:
 Develop procedures for conducting and reporting data analyses regarding revenue management, patient safety, and regulatory compliance of
healthcare institutions
 Develop policies for health information management professionals based on appropriate health laws regarding the standards and procedures for

Imagine you are the new administrator of the health information management department at Mercy Vale Medical Center. This particular institution has
struggled as of late. It has patient safety issues, regulatory violations, and, to make matters worse, financial struggles as well. These problems include the
following:
 Patient safety issues abound. More patient falls have been reported in the past six months than at any other point in Mercy Vale’s history. There has
also been increased incidence of infection, causing the hospital a great deal of scrutiny.
 Record-keeping issues have caused various regulatory violations to be levied against the hospital. Specifically, discharge paperwork is not being
completed correctly, with some not being properly signed. The hospital is also under fire from The Joint Commission (TJC) for privacy violations. TJC
believes that the busy clinical areas in Mercy Vale are not properly monitored, making patient information potentially visible.
 Revenue management problems have also arisen as a result of poor coding procedures. This has affected key financial aspects of the hospital, such as
reimbursement. Many claims are being denied across the institution because of these issues.

Your first task as the new administrator is to develop new procedures for your employees that seek to address these issues. These procedures must detail how
employees should approach the analysis of issues presently affecting Mercy Vale and outline more effective daily operations to better align with regulations.
Then, in Prompt B, you will design training materials for effectively teaching these new procedures to employees and propose leadership strategies that would
ease the implementation of new procedures.
Before you design training materials for improving your employees’ performance, you must first develop a new set of standards and procedures to address
problems at Mercy Vale. This will include policies and procedures regarding using data analytics, ensuring compliance, and applying leadership strategies to
improve ethical practices and cultural competence of employees at Mercy Vale.
Specifically, the following critical elements must be addressed:
I. Develop new procedures for the health information management team for both conducting and reporting data analyses. In your procedures, be sure to
consider what employees should be looking for in their analyses and how those analyses should be reported out. Your procedures must include
processes for how the health information management team should approach analyzing the following:
A. The revenue management problems of the organization
B. The patient safety issues that have been affecting the organization
C. The problems associated with regulatory violations the organization has incurred and their causes
II. Develop a new policy that will improve the organization’s compliance with standard-setting agencies and health laws and regulations. Your policy must
accomplish the following:
A. Design measures that will guide employees in keeping patient health information secure
B. Develop procedures that will enable management to track access to patient health information
C. Ensure compliance with appropriate health laws that would further improvement of the organization’s compliance with standard-setting
agencies
III. Propose leadership strategies that the health information management team could employ in enacting your new standards and procedures for the
