Over the weeks, I have learned the value of evidence-based practice in attaining my role as a DNP-prepared nurse. I am better equipped to understand the definitions, concepts, and integration of evidence into practice settings for safety and quality improvement plans. As I highlight my accomplished undertakings in this course from the last few weeks’ discussions, assignments, and readings, one area of interest has been on the search for evidence. Before undertaking this class, I had no adequate understanding of what type of evidence is suitable for use in evidence-based practice. Additionally, I had no adequate understanding of the assessment of sources suitable for integration in practice. Before joining the DNP program, I had no clear distinction between evidence-based practice sources from the rest of the sources. These areas of concern were all unclear to me before I joined the course on theoretical and scientific foundations of nursing course.
After joining the course on evidence-based practice, I have identified that different components of evidence-based practice are needed to effectively integrate the best evidence to improve patient outcomes and enhance my role as a DNP-prepared nurse. One area of concern has been searching the evidence. I have identified the literature search process of evidence-based practice to be a systematic and thorough process of identifying credible and reliable sources for use in evidence-based practice. I have learned that different types of evidence including books, peer-reviewed articles, industry reports, organizational reports, committee reports, and websites information. Since all these sources have different credible and reliable aspects, I have to undertake a literature search process as part of my commitment to only integrate viable, valuable, and credible evidence into my practice. To conduct a literature search, I have identified that I need to plan my literature search process.

I have identified that literature search planning begins by classifying the research question I am interested in addressing in my literature search process. This question requires the adoption of a systematic approach to answer the design of the research question. From discussions, peer responses, readings, and assignments, I have established that organizing my research area of inquiry requires a PICOT question. A PICOT question identifies the patient (population), intervention, comparison, outcome, and (sometimes) time. After establishing the research question, I have learned the need to identify the keywords. This process involves the determination of the language and terminology of my research question that will help to establish the most effective search terms for use in my literature search. Interestingly, I have also learned that keywords identification can also be achieved through reviewing the background information of the key areas of interest and relevant to the topic of interest defined in the research question. These considerations provide me with an idea of the terms that I will use the keywords for my literature search.
There are several issues of concern that I have to explore in the literature search process. One concern of interest in literature search is where to search for sources. While different sources exist where I can identify the sources, obtaining credible sources requires a systematic search approach that identifies databases where search can be conducted. Walden University support resources provided me with guidelines on the relevant databases I can search for valuable literature. Now that I have the keywords, I can use Walden University Library to search for credible and reliable sources for use in my literature search process. I can also search other databases such as CINAHL Plus with Full Text, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, EBSCOhost, MEDLINE, and Nursing Reference Center Plus. These databases and libraries are sufficient to retrieve all the relevant sources to answer the research question by entering the keywords or phrases. No two databases can have the same content, which explains the need for searching in different databases and libraries. After obtaining the sources, I can organize all sources retrieved for further processes such as screening of the sources for credibility and reliability, evaluating for validity and usefulness, and appraise the sources. These fundamental processes are important in enhancing the literature search process.

This Discussion is a particularly good example of how colleagues can support one another in tandem as common work gets underway.

Review the Week 8 Learning Resources, with particular attention to the Walden Library resources to support your literature search.
Evaluate your process as you access the resource materials and your literature search gets underway. Keep in mind the importance of selecting current literature, i.e., published in the previous 5 years. Consider what is working for you in identifying search topics related to your critical question and in finding relevant current articles, and what questions you have for colleagues and your Instructor.
Also draw on your Week 7 Discussion experience in identifying scholarly articles related to your critical question and comments from colleagues to act on as you begin your literature search. Be proactive in stating your questions and needs and clarifying your search process, to maximize the value of this Discussion and your Assignment in this module.
