The goals of this project are to develop your research skills, learn to write with a business audience in mind, and apply what we’ve been learning about antiracism in previous units of the class.

The project will be in the format of a portfolio, which is a collection of assignments on the same topic. The portfolio will collect all of the assignments in one long Word or Google Doc file. Each assignment will start on a new page within the document. The assignments within the portfolio are:

A case study of your dream company or a business plan, if you’re an entrepreneur
A business letter to employees
A Bit about the Business Letter:
Practicing business communication is important. Writing to an audience of clients, co-workers, and people whom you supervise requires you to be clear, think about your tone, and proofread your work. We’ll create some guidelines based on letters written by others, and then you’ll write an email to employees that addresses this issue:

Write a business letter to employees of your company inviting them to attend a talk given by a respected leader in your field. I want you to actually find and select a person who has published a work, such as an article or TEDTalk and expertise in the field. Or, since many corporations are creating policies that address racial and social justice, find and select a person who can help the company achieve these goals.

Guidelines:
Contain a date, greeting, and conclusion. Place date at the top.
Introduce yourself. Self- intro at the beginning with your name and title.
Give a concise mention of the background / context that makes it appropriate to invite the speaker and then quickly lead into the goal of the rest of the letter.
Address the issue within half a page and full-page
If there are any steps that a reader should follow, start a new paragraph and then list them, step-by-step.
Do not underline things that are not hyperlinks because people may think they are clickable. Rather, use bold font or italics or both in order to emphasize.
Consider your tone for controversial topics. Kyle (Links to an external site.) remains clear that he does not have a bias and is not making assumptions or judgements in his letter about students having a vaccine mandate. Think about how you would like to present yourself through your tone, word choice. For instance, if you are inviting employees to an event, try to empathize with them if they cannot make it.
At the close of the letter, you may change your tone from neutral to optimistic/excited.
Be single-spaced, standard font (Arial, Calibri) and font size (11 or 12 point)

Please include it on a new page after your case study assignment + its works cited page.

A Bit about the Case Study:
Research and summarize the company’s background: Who? What? Where? When? Why? From there, transition to 3 assertions that give evidence and explain why it is a desirable workplace, an undesirable one, or a combination of both.

One of your assertions can be about the company’s diversity and inclusion efforts, e.g. its response to George Floyd’s murder in 2020. Researching their social media accounts for posts around that time could help.
Page length: 5 to 6 pages (without the works cited page)
Use MLA Style to cite sources and create a works cited page.
