Critical Assignment:
Interview Part 1: Data Collection
Students will interview a couple OR family of their choice (Note: students may not interview themselves, their spouses or significant other) using an interview guide, which is provided. Both individuals from the couple must be present and participating for the couples interview. For the family interview, there must be a minimum of 2 people (parent and older child) or both parents + child(ren). Interviews should be recorded and responses then transcribed in verbatim. This assignment requires knowledge of social scientific research methodology. Readings are provided for those who have not taken a course on research methods.
As a note, qualitative interviewing provides a method for collecting rich and detailed information about how individuals experience, understand and explain events in their lives. While the main questions will help establish the topic of discussion, most interviewees will only have a general idea of the interviewer’s goals and the level of depth that the interviewer is looking for in their responses. Follow up questions, probing questions, and reframing the question may be necessary to elicit a detailed response. It is important that students record and transcribe the interviewee’s responses in verbatim to preserve his/her/their “voice”. It is also important to take note of paralinguistic behaviors as this paints a richer overall picture of the interaction dynamic. Do NOT summarize or paraphrase responses. Responses can be typed directly into the interview guide and submitted for credit.
(CLO: 4.1)
Interview Part 2: Qualitative Analysis
Students will evaluate and analyze the interview data collected in week 4 from a sociological perspective. Readings have been made available on qualitative interview analysis. Please read this material if you have not taken a course in research methods. Students must evaluate the relationship dynamics as well as specific problems/issues that the couple or family interviewed in week 4 have faced or are currently facing. Since each interview is different, the types of sociological concepts that are applicable will also be different. Recall that concepts are the bolded black terms in your textbook that have clear definitions. Select the terms that best speak to the sociological themes and patterns found in your qualitative interview data. While writing the essay, be sure to BOLD the concepts that are introduced and make sure each term is properly defined and/or explained before applying it to examples.
Students must also utilize the textbook and 3-4 additional peer reviewed journal articles (use the Annie Gabriel Library) to address these relationship dynamics and issues from a sociological perspective and how these sociological concepts or theories can be applied to couples and/or families more broadly in society. Finally, students should incorporate the Christian worldview by incorporating the Biblical perspective by way of solutions and/or guidance. Papers must be at least 5-7 pages (not including title and reference pages) and in APA format.
