You will select an NGO that seeks to address one of the concerns or
phenomena that we have explored in this semester: human rights, environmental justice,
indigenous land rights, and protecting vulnerable populations in war and conflict. Your
local or international NGO should work with populations in the country that you studied in your
Human Rights Country Report project (Honduras, Hungary, India, Israel and the Occupied
Palestinian Territories, Syria, and Yemen).

In a 4 FULL paged paper, you should provide a thesis-driven analysis that addresses the following
questions:

1.) What are some of the national policies and geopolitical events (colonization, civil
wars, occupations, coups, climate-related disasters, etc.) within your country shaped the work of
your NGO?

2.) What has the reception of your NGO been within that country? What is their
reputation?

3.) What does your NGO demonstrate about the complexities of aid work?
In your introduction, you should briefly explain the history and mission of your NGO and, at the
close of your introduction, include your thesis statement.

Paper should incorporate two scholarly sources such as peer-reviewed journal articles or book chapters. One of those scholarly sources should be drawn from our assigned reading. Please do NOT cite encyclopedia entries as a scholarly sources. Additionally, you should cite at least two news media sources, one NGO source, and one text that we read and discussed during this semester. Your paper address the following concerns:

1.) The history of this NGO: when was it established? What is its organizing mission? From
which organizations does it receive its funding?

2.) Which populations does the NGO serve and what has it accomplished? How has its
recent mission been informed by national policies and geopolitical and
environmental events with your country? I strongly encourage you to use one of your
scholarly sources to address the country’s history.

3.) How has it been received in the country and region which it serves? What relationship
does it have with the country’s current government?

4.) Explain how your NGO demonstrates some of the problems and complexities of
humanitarian aid.

Paperwill be evaluated by the following criteria:

1. Analysis and Research: At minimum, you should have an organizing thesis that you fully
develop throughout your paper and engage scholarly sources that address the national policies
geopolitical events that have shaped the work of your NGO. Each paragraph and claim that
you advance should clearly relate to and be in support of your thesis. Your thesis, moreover,
must identify and explain the geopolitical events that have shaped the work of your NGO and
what your NGO’s history demonstrates about the complexities of aid work.

Research, part 2: At minimum, you should engage two scholarly sources in your paper and
accurately represent their argument by fully introducing your source (i.e. “In Naomi Klein’s
book, This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs. the Climate (2014) she observes . . .”) and citing
a representative passage from their text that you then analyze;

Research, part 3: Please make certain that you consistently cite your sources. When you
paraphrase an author’s ideas or information, you should include an in-text citation at the close of
your sentence. Likewise, if you include their exact phrasing, you should place that in quotation
marks followed by a citation;

Organization: Your paper should be organized by your argument rather than an itemized list of
answers to the questions that I have posed in these guidelines. Make certain to include a
conclusion that reinforces your argument and its stakes. Put otherwise, your conclusion should
address the “so what?” question of why your research matters.

Your paper should use MLA-formatting (double-spaced, 12 Times New Roman font, with in-text
citations throughout) and include an alphabetized works cited page
