Case Study
Your friend Miguel’s wife, Lori, will shortly be deployed in the Middle East for a one-year tour of duty. Until now, their son, Sean, who is 17 months old, has been taken care of by Lori during the day and by Miguel in the evening when Lori goes to work. Lori and Miguel need to find a day care center close to Miguel’s work. They wonder how to find the best day care situation for Sean.
Do the following
1. Read Ch 3: Infant Cognition, pp. 97-102, and Language: What Develops in the First Two Years, pp. 103-108.
2. Read Ch 4: Emotional Development, pp. 126-131, The Development of Social Bonds, pp. 132-142, and Who Should Care for Babies, pp. 146-151.

5. Write at least three paragraphs (about 200-250 words) that include information on the following four items.
1. Describe Sean’s cognition and language skills that are typical for a 17 or 18-month old infant. Search Chapter 3 for this information.
2. Describe Sean’s emotional development and his social bonds that are typical for a 17 or 18-month old infant. Search Chapter 4 for this information.
3. What advice would you give to Sean’s parents in finding an appropriate day care center that will foster his cognitive, language and emotional development?
4. Use information in Ch 4 and the Baby Center: Childcare website to list 10 things you would advise the couple to look for in seeking a day care center for Sean. Be sure to include things to avoid.
