Instructions
Choose a controversial issue related to Gender, Globalisation and Development, covered in the first 8 weeks of the unit. (Eg. Issues might include – race and gender; race and sexuality; globalisation and employment; masculinity and globalisation; sex work; migration and trafficking; surrogacy; development, gender and sexuality).
Create a photo-essay on this issue. This will contain around 6 images. In previous years it was a requirement that at least half of these had to be photos taken by you, with the remaining photos sourced from a magazine or the internet (and cited accurately). As many of you might be restricted in your movement due to the COVID pandemic, this year it would be fine to source all your images (feel free to still take some photos if it is safe for you to do so). When sourcing your images, ensure that they are carefully chosen to work with your essay narrative.
The essay will approach a controversial issue pertaining to gender and globalization, or gender and development, or all three, and you will develop an argument, series of perspectives or set of propositions in relation to that issue.
Your essay will also include an explanation of the issue you have chosen and how it fits the brief (as a ‘tricky’ or controversial issue that connects gender and globalisation).
On the basis of the knowledge gained from the first 7-8 weeks of readings, lectures and audio-visual material the design of your photo-essay will contain an argument, proposition or information you wish to share as a community or publicly circulated paper. You MUST draw on the scholarly literature from this unit (and beyond).
In addition to the readings and learning materials from this unit, you will also draw on academic literature on the specific issue you are addressing.
