Instructions for Writing Assignment #1
A. Description
It’s one thing to speak about the geography, borders, and political status of a region, but it is a different perspective to look at the people who actually live there. In this essay, you will be taking a closer look at the people who are central to the debate “Where is the Middle East?” Saudi Aramco World is a print and online magazine funded by Saudi Arabia and created in 1949 with the mission to increase cross-cultural understanding and to broaden the knowledge of the histories, cultures, and geography of the Middle East from the past to the present.

The First Look (Links to an external site.) feature provides online photo essays of people’s lives across the Middle East and gives an intimate look into their everyday realities, concerns, interests, passions, and their culture, art, food, and landscapes. Try to review the pictures on this website and read a few of the stories so you can have an idea of the range of stories featured.

B. Directions
For writing assignment #1, you will choose one picture from the first look feature and write a short paper on the significance of the photo in relation to its history, culture, politics, arts, or religion.

You are welcome to use the same photo and information that you posted in your discussion and convert that into an essay. Please use MLA format for your essay.

Assignment Requirements:
Submit a 2-3 page essay (minimum 350-500 words) based on one of the photos from the FirstLook (Links to an external site.) feature. Please upload your essay which should be in a Word document format (not PDF). Your essay should include the following:

Copy of the photo that you will be discussing (make sure to give the photo proper credits and add the photo under the title of your essay)
Describe the photo that you chose to write about and what you learned that is interesting or new information? You will need to do additional research to give more information about what is being photographed. This will require you to use two academic sources to support your findings.
The first paragraph must include a THESIS STATEMENT and the last paragraph must be your CONCLUSION. The thesis of your essay should answer the question: Does this photo challenge any of the stereotypes that were presented in the documentary Reel Bad Arabs?
Research about the historical, political, religious, or cultural significance of the photo or people featured. You can research online, but the resource must be an academic or news website and not a personal website or blog.
The essay must include two academic sources cited in the essay and listed on your work cited page.
Please use double space and 12 point font in Times New Roman.

2. At least two academic sources are required to be cited in this paper and listed in your bibliography or work cited page. The academic sources can include academic journals, reputable news articles, books, websites from the UN and other research institutions, movies, and documentaries. Please avoid blogs, personal websites, and yourself or family members as sources.
