What is the Essay?

An academic review on Chapter 7 of the textbook, “Of Ships and Shipwrecks.”

The review will identity the overarching argument of that chapter, explain how Jill Lepore develops that argument in the body of the paper, and evaluate the argumentation demonstrated in the chapter. Please form a thesis of this review essay in the first paragraph.

· In the body of the paper, please discuss what evidence contributes to the overarching argument, and how.

· Please evaluate how Lepore builds her argument by discussing (1) the strength of her interpretations of selected specifics and examples and (2) the connections between the specifics and examples and the central claim this chapter advances.

· Be as critical as you can.

This is not a research paper. No materials outside of the reading.

Appendix I

TITLE. All papers should have proper titles, including this one. The title should re-capture the essence of your thesis. Something like “Report on Chapter Three” is not counted as a substantive, and thus real, title.

PARAGRAPH. Paragraphs should be between three sentences and ¾ page. All paragraphs must have their topic sentences. Many students have a tendency to build to a conclusion in each paragraph, so that the last sentence actually delivers the point of the paragraph. This is fine as a writing practice, as long as you then go back through your paper and turn those conclusory sentences into topic sentences.

SENTENCE. One sentence shall only have one focus. Avoid massaging too much information into one sentence.

PARAPHRASING > DIRECT QUOTES. Be very judicious about selecting direct quotes from the textbook. As a rule of thumb, always try paraphrasing first.

PASSIVE VOICE. Be specific and explicit on who did what. I regard “it is adj. that ……” as passive voice, for that structure does not specify the subject and it is unnecessarily long.

USE STRONG VERBS. “Was, is, are, were, would,” are weak verbs. Find the action in your sentence, and bring that to the fore.

THE IMPORTANCE OF EDITING. Editing is as important as writing, and is the difference between an adequate paper and a good one, or a good one and a great one. Excellent papers do not start out as excellent first drafts; instead, they result from the author spending a lot of time thinking, writing, and rewriting.

Your paper will always – ALWAYS – be better if you write as much as you can and then edit it down to the word/page limit than if you write until you hit the word/page limit.

“CLARITY! CLARITY! CLARITY!” As the classic book The Elements of Style, originally published before you (and I) were born, states, writing is all about clarity. As a useful practice, please consider reading your drafts after some passage of time, with a fresh pair of eyes. If some sentences, words, and structures are unclear, revise!
