Group Ethics Assignment:

Your group ethics assignment is essentially the same as the rest of your weekly discussion question assignments. The only differences our that instead of giving your own opinion and going unquestioned, you’re engaging in discussing these human topics with other humans, and instead of answering the questions I pose, you answer the questions and points raised from each other. The essential purpose of this assignment is that philosophy shouldn’t be exclusively a solitary activity; rather it should have real world effect and change for the betterment of ourselves and the people we are exposed to. Therefore, when you’re discussing with your fellow interlocutors (your group members), your goal is to try to convince and persuade them of your claim, that is: Which is the best moral framework for how we should approach and implement justice, out of the three we’ve discussed so far, Utilitarianism, Kantian ethics, or Rawls’ ethics?

-If you plan on making an argument on Utilitarianism or Kant, either for or against, you might want to consider these secondary sources and how either a sort of cost-benefit analysis or the categorical imperative will apply:

– -note: you could also make a case for utilitarianism or Kantian ethics using affirmative actions programs as an example too.

Requirements

-The requirements for this assignment is that you must speak on each of the three ethics philosophers, demonstrating you have an adequate understanding of them.

-You must make a clear case of the defects of a certain moral framework and the strengths of another moral framework.

-You must respond to the actual points raised by your fellow group members. Therefore if someone raises a point, and you agree or disagree, do not simply say you agree or disagree, but give an argument with reasons of why you agree or a counterargument of why you disagree.

Note:

– Don’t mistake that by the secondary sources I suggest, that I am either for or against a certain moral framework as “correct”, just because the speaker in the video is. Also, be aware that it is ok to have to have your own, perhaps diverging opinion, so long as it is well thought through and informed by the consideration and adequate understanding of the three main moral frameworks we’re learning about.

-You are divided into groups of 3 or 4. Some of your group members may not respond in your assignment because either they have decided to drop or are just very irresponsible. So long as at least 1 member of your group is engaging in discussion with you, you are good. If you find that not even one of your group members is engaging in discussion with you by the third day past the start date of this assignment, then you should worry and email me, so I can assign you to another group. If you do not see your name assigned in a group, it’s probably because I haven’t seen work submitted from you yet, so email me and I will assign you to a group.
