Globalization manifests itself in a variety of ways, but few are more apparent than those that arise within popular culture. Karaoke, for example, originated in Japan, but one can find karaoke parlors in some of the farthest-reaching corners of the world–totally distanced from the original venue of its origins. This, however, only tells a single dimension of the story of karaoke (the one about how it moved); yet it has also become transnational in scope, taking on a totally different character outside of Japanese popular culture. In some ways, it has taken on a new life after its global experience. Some sing karaoke at bars, others at parties, weddings, business events, etc. The global experience has made it a global phenomenon, far different from its original appearance of a gimmicky soundbox created to entertain one person in Japan.
Karaoke is only one example, but other examples may include:
food (e.g., sushi developing into ‘California rolls’)
fashion (e.g., Nike as a global brand)
music (e.g. K-pop garnering a global following–regardless of fan literacy in Korean)
entertainment (e.g., Anime and Manga reaching the shores of the Western World)
language (e.g., Expanse and proliferation of English)
In this discussion, identify a product of popular culture that has run the course of globalization; moving away from the United States, catching popular attention, and becoming something totally different as it evolves into a global phenomenon. There are thousands of examples out there, so be creative and locate one that grabs you and is interesting to discuss!
