I will examine the use of mine-en-scene in the Action/Sci-fi genre in the two films, Spiderman: Far from home and Avengers: Endgame.

Directions:

This paper is due on 11:59 PM December 13th . It makes up 25% of your overall grade (20% for students in the Scholars Program. Late papers will be lowered a half grade for every day the assignment is late, with no more than 3 days after the final due date to submit.
7-10 pages in length, double-spaced, typed, 12 point font, with a title page (the title page is not part of the page count).
1. Choose TWO FILMS to watch that are either:

A) of the same genre, you may choose from any of the following: western, gangster, musical, horror, sci-fi, film noir, adventure, comedy, action, romantic comedy, crime, fantasy.

OR

B) by the same director.

2. Compare and contrast how the two films you selected use the elements of the ONEOF THE FOLLOWING in their narrative:
– mise-en-scène,

– cinematography

– editing

– sound

• Rather than offering a catalogue of your observations regarding the films’ similarities and differences, your essay should pose an argument about the significance of the connection. Your thesis should not simply state that, “films X and Y treat theme/character/plot element Z similarly and differently/similarly.”You should pose a theory as to WHY the filmmaker(s) made these specific stylistic choices and how they contribute to shape the overall form.

• Use specific examples of shots or scenes to support your argument. This is NOT a plot recap.

• Effective comparison/contrast essays highlight how similarities and differences reveal something important about each film, or the filmmaker(s). Ask yourself why it is important to examine these films together and what they reveal about either the genre or the filmmaker (depending if you choose A or B).

• Analyze the stylistic element in specific detail, but don’t just describe the technique used; try to determine their function in the films. Why might these stylistic choices have been made? What do they seem to mean for the film?
• No later than Monday November 1st by 11:59PM let me know your film selectionand which element of cinema you will analyze for your take home paper. You will submit this through Canvas under the assignment “Final Paper Topic”. You do not need to upload as a .doc/.pdf, you can write it directly into Canvas with “text entry”. You will still need to come up with a thesis for your paper, but you do not need to submit this to me. I only need to know which films you’re selecting and which element of cinema you will be writing about.

o Example) “I will be exploring Quentin Tarantino’s use of mise-en-scene in Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill Vol.1.”
o Example) “I will examine how sound is utilized in the horror genre by analyzing this stylistic element in The Shining and The Ring.”
