Also I need you to response to these two reflections.

  •
  • 1- Why do you think the young men of the time refused to change their fashion in light of the demands of world War II?
    • There may have been a few reasons they refused to stop wearing them. The suits looked cool, and made the men feel good about themselves. They were a form of disobedience to the mainstream white culture, and a way to assert pride in their own culture. If they did not feel represented in the society, there was not a desire to conform to the rule. The suits were a status symbol in their own community and a way to fit in with your own peers.
  • It was more than a suit, fashion can play a role in social unrest, what would be today’s equivalent to the zoot suit and why.
    • I can think of 2 items of clothing used as protest or political statements currently. Black Lives Matter apparel, is easily recognizable and can have a few different messages. It is a statement of your desire for change in our society. I do see it being worn or displayed by many different cultural groups. The other is a red MAGA hat, it may be worn by people with affiliation to the Republican Party and particularly with allegiance to Donald Trump. It has become a lightning rod for attention both ways. Many people will see a red baseball hat and have an almost physical reaction, negative or positive without even being close enough to read the hat for confirmation of its message. Both of these items have been used to convey a person’s stance on current issues. Wearing these items can be a catalyst for confrontation or violence, or a way to connect to others.
  • 2- Why do you think the young men of the time refused to change their fashion in light of the demands of world War II?I think the men of the time refused to change their fashion because it was a new and exciting fashion trend it represented who they were, where they came from, and what they stood for, the world was also evolving, people wanted to be the first to try and have everything “new” that was being invented/created at that time. I would say it was negative considering fabrics and other materials needed to be saved/distributed for the war and the zoot suits were originally worn by people of color and different races, the world was still very segregated at that time. It was more than a suit, fashion can play a role in social unrest, what would be today’s equivalent to the zoot suit and why.One clothing item that could be equivalent to the zoot suit today could be a Kimono, a full-length robe usually worn in Japan. Although most people don’t have an issue with the specific clothing item nowadays, it still represents culture and tradition dating all the way back to the 3rd century.
