USE THE TEXT: You have to use at least 100 words of quotes from the text, and it is a *very*
good idea to cite the texts that we have read as you go, but remember that a sentence by Aristotle
does not count towards the minimum words that you need. Put the word count of your exam
underneath your name.
AVOID FLUFF: Each sentence should have a specific, different, and relevant piece of
information in it to count towards your grade. Avoid fluff like “Plato was Greek” or “Since the
dawn of time, people have thought.” To show you understand an idea (and aren’t just
regurgitating notes): explain quotes that you use, and put things into your own words, and come
up with an interesting modern example.
MAKE GOOD ARGUMENTS: The key to this exam is that it is not “based on your opinion,”
but “based on your argument.” For instance, if you think that Kantian ethics would defend
euthanasia, I will grade you based on how well you make that case, not on whether I agree with
you about Kant and euthanasia, and I will consider giving you a point if you put an exclamation
point after your word count. A good argument: (1) grounds itself on the text, applying to
multiple sections of the text, not just one part, and citing quotes that support your interpretation;
(2) shows understanding of the argument by putting things in your own words and using
examples; (3) considers and assesses alternate interpretations.
Final Exam: The final exam concentrates on quality over quantity, so you will be essentially
performing a single triple analysis in depth on a dilemma regarding Facebook, Google, or a
different internet service of your choosing. Given our course’s focus on Facebook, the most
straightforward path is to choose a dilemma inspired by the documentary “The Facebook
Dilemma.” After the triple analysis, you will use the “Five Faces of Oppression” framework to
describe how at least two of the five faces of oppression is involved in the dilemma of your
choice. Introduction and Conclusion paragraphs are optional, so concentrate on writing excellent
body paragraphs and add an intro and conclusion only if you have time. The minimum is thus
five body paragraphs, each of which must be at least 200 words long, so the minimum length for
your exam is 1,000 words altogether. Please remember: the only way you can really FAIL this
exam is if you copy EITHER ideas OR words from another source WITHOUT citation. That
would be plagiarism, and you will receive and automatic 0/100 for the exam, likely failing you
for the course. In any case, a rough outline of your final exam will look like this:
BODY PARAGRAPH 1: Presentation of your dilemma, ideally with some quotes from news
articles or the documentary with time-stamp (e.g. “The Facebook Dilemma” 12:40).
BODY PARAGRAPH 2: Using utilitarianism to compare the short and long term consequences
of both sides of the dilemma.
BODY PARAGRAPH 3: Using deontology to question whether either side of the dilemma
involves a universalizable maxim or whether either side treats humans as means instead of “ends
in themselves.”
BODY PARAGRAPH 4: Using virtue ethics to explain which sort of “life of happiness”
corresponds to either side of the dilemma and describing at least one virtue promoted by each
side.
BODY PARAGRAPH 5: Using the “five faces of oppression” framework to describe two aspects
of oppression that the dilemma involves. You could describe either ways in which one or both of
the sides commits one of these aspects of oppression and/or how they combat one of the aspects.

You should definitely watch the “Facebook Dilemma” documentary, since it will give you the
best sense of which dilemmas you might want to analyze, but just to give you a sense of what to
be thinking of here are some example dilemmas, which you could choose if you are unsure:

-Should Facebook be allowed to sell
your customer data to advertisers
