Some examples of things to ask yourself to critically evaluate the article:
Construct Validity: do you they think they effectively and accurately measured the variables they intended/claimed to have measured? Is there something you think they could’ve done differently what would have more accurately measured them?
External validity: This is regarding whether they can generalize their findings from their sample based on the participants and methods. For the participants – do they have enough participants? Is it biased? Can they generalize their claims based on this sample? Are the methods something they would realistically encounter in real life settings or could the results be due to an artificial lab environment/stimuli?
Internal validity: For the design – did they randomly assign subjects to groups (ie was it an experiment or quasi-experimental design or correlation, etc.)? Did they have proper control groups? Did they do a pre-test and could that have affected results? Was it a single-blind or double-blind experiment? Is it possible that their behavior may have changed because they knew they were being tested on something?
If it’s a correlational study, what extraneous variables could potentially be accounting the observed relationship? What about the directionality issue?
Statistical analysis – did they do the correct analysis based on their design? Does it seem like they engaged in any p-hacking or researchers’ degrees of freedom?
