McDonald’s Overview
Companies around the globe deal with ethical issues every day. Corporate ethical standards, as well as ethically driven decisions and actions, are complicated as they must consider interests of an ample quantity of stakeholders and adhere to different laws and norms, which terms very often contradict each other.
McDonald’s is a company with a long history of successful development first in the US and then in dozens of countries. The company was founded in 1954 by Ray Kroc and two brothers Dick and Mac McDonald, who opened their restaurant in San Bernardino, California. The restaurant produced a short menu consisting of burgers, fried things, and drinks. A limited number of sources to deliver and compact list of products to prepare allowed the companions to attract customers by fast servicing and high quality of food. In 1955 they managed to establish the company named McDonald’s System Inc. and in 1961 Ray Kroc patented McDonald’s as a brand. Nowadays this brand is known and recognized around the world. The company expanded to many countries building restaurants, growing products for their famous menus and hiring local staff to serve customers.
The ethical issues for the company doing its business in catering are very complicated and interconnected, but they become even more intricate when the company enters the global market. Over years of stunning success, McDonald’s gained experience in ethical management. There is a range of ethical issues the company deals with daily and both domestic and global ethics cases refer to corporate governance, social and corporate responsibility, environmental protection, sustainable development, human rights, health and safety, fair trade principles, corruption, compliance to laws and regulations, and application of business practices. Every strategic or regular decision taken by every employee of the company should be evaluated from the ethical point of view and this is a heavy responsibility based on the awareness of belonging to the great corporation and its future.
Answers to Questions
- McDonald’s is an international company with hundreds of distant subsidiaries where multicultural teams work, and lots of charities to sustain their CSR and give the best the communities, and also, they take care of their own charity named ‘Ronald McDonald house charities’. To rally behind strategic goals and mission of the company as well as to support the prominent level of the brand the staff must have common well addressed and easy understandable ethical norms and values.
- The key stakeholders of the McDonald’s are company employees which are prioritized as top stakeholder group, investors, that want to have profitability and the interest in growing revenue, customers, as they are the second priority of McDonald corporation, even though costumers have criticized the health impact of McDonald’s food choice, governments of different countries, and communities where business units are located. Consideration of the stakeholders’ rights in business decision-making is a vital risk management tool because such approach allows understanding how a particular decision can impact every cluster of stakeholders and what consequences may occur. The best approach for Mc Donald’s to interact with stakeholders is complete network according to network theory.
1- Every international company which wants to develop further must build its strategy analysing previously globalization factors, that may harm or benefit. Such ethical theories as ethical absolutism and relativism are not applicable for globalization processes, though the company management should be aware of them. On the contrary ethical pluralism is more convenient to survey the previous company achievements and deliver new strategies. Positive globalization factors include support of developing societies, improve standards of living and contribute to state laws. Negative factors cover such issues as discrimination of jobs and position, talented people draining from third countries, and spread of infectious diseases.
2- Legal systems of the developed and underdeveloped countries differ drastically and allow for unfair actions which can be proved as eligible. Despite vast globalization processes the governments of many first world and third world countries are not at pains to integrate global ethical issues – sustainability, social responsibility, health, and safety – into the core laws and norms of their countries. Therefore, global companies should surf between different legislations and apply best practices in global business ethics.
3- Summarizing the review, it should be mentioned that ethical theories developed actively and changed drastically upon human societies development and globalization. Since enunciation of the theory of ethical absolutism the ethical issues perception through centuries has allowed developing new postmodernism theories like the theory of justice, ethics of rights, virtues ethics, and feminine ethics. The global companies develop and every stage of their development, as well as every decision being taken, should be based on ethical theories and ethical practices that consider all internal and external implications and impacted stakeholders, with our planet among them.
