Your paper is an ethical analysis paper. You’re looking at a
moral dilemma and applying an ethical theory to that dilemma with the goal of at least shedding some
light on the issue, and ideally giving good reason for one action or another with respect to the issue. For
any claims that you make, you must provide support. You’ll need an overall thesis about the piece you
are critically examining, and then you need to argue your position using evidence and justification. The
point is not to defeat the thinking of some famous philosopher, but to develop your critical thinking
skills and composition.
Requirements:
oYour paper will be approximately 1,500 words
oYour paper will have a thesis statement that is concise and is stated in one sentence.
oMLA Format, Double Spaced, Times New Roman 12 Point Font
oThis is considered an argumentative research paper with a thesis statement.
oHelp is available at: Roane State Online Writing Lab
oYour paper must have at least 3 sources.
oYour paper must have an introduction that includes your thesis statement. Your thesis
statement should be clear and easily recognizable to your reader.
oYour paper should argue in favor of your thesis statement.
oDo not assume that your reader has knowledge of what you are writing about. This means you
must define any and all terminology that is not commonly known, and explain complex concepts
that are not commonly known.
oYou are responsible for having no grammatical errors according to MLA guidelines.
oYou are responsible for having solid mechanics according to MLA guidelines.
oVisit the Purdue Owl for online help in these areas: Purdue Owl
oNote that your paper should have in text citations, proper use of quotes, and contain proper
paraphrasing. If your paper does not, it is considered plagiarized and will receive a failing grade.
Format:
oIntroduction: Introduce your topic and a little background. Include your thesis
statement AND after your thesis statement you should say something about how you
plan to prove your thesis. Think of it this way—your thesis statement is your
destination, but your reader wants to know how you plan to reach your destination as
well. This also shouldn’t be more than a paragraph.
oBody: Talk about any background information necessary for your topic. If it doesn’t
pertain to your analysis, leave it out. Fluff is your enemy. Argue in favor of your thesis
and make sure that each paragraph ties back into your thesis directly and that all
information is necessary to prove your thesis. It is beneficial to restate your thesis a few
times in the body as well. You must consider at least one objection to your thesis and
you must address that objection and demonstrate why your thesis or argument is still
better despite the objection.
Avoid straw man fallacies when considering objections. Read here: Straw Man
Fallacies
The body (and everywhere else) should have in text citations.
oConclusion: Your conclusion should restate your thesis and tie everything together. You
should not have any new information in your conclusion. Make sure that your
conclusion does not contradict your thesis.
oCitations page: You must have a works cited page.
