Analyze a sophisticated film of your choice with its release
dating from January 2019 until the present(I was thinking either Once Upon a Time in Holywood or Parasite but it can be any movie of your choice that has a good score and is released after 2019) Follow the instructions in the
webpage document on How to Carry Out the First Film Analysis Essay as well as
the Addendum for Film Analysis Essay #2. Draft should be a minimum of 1500.
Submission should be in doc or docx format. As you compose the essay, save the
file as a doc or docx please. Be sure to do a Works Cited entry for the film on
the last page or on a separate page. You should follow the documentation format
from Purdue University for MLA citation. Do not consult other sources for the
assignment beyond the film itself. You could do background reading on the
content displayed in the film to help you understand it better, but that’s it,
and it will not constitute a source. In other words, do not consult internet
reviews of the film or interviews with the director, etc. to help with this assignment.
Only the film and our key critical vocabulary should be employed. Any instances
of plagiarism will mean a failure on the assignment as well as the course.
Please be forewarned. With regard to semiotics, I am more interested in seeing
you carry out a semiotic reading of some part or all of the film rather than
simply throwing the terms around. In other words, identify the signifiers and
signifieds. If you think you are capable of applying the appropriate semiotic
term to the case, feel free to do so. With regard to cinematic elements, I
would like to see you do a reading of a frame, a shot or a scene using our
terms of cinematic analysis, similar to preceding reading task. You should
employ the appropriate Arnheim terms in that case or use the vocabulary of the
diachronic shot discussed in chapter 3 of Monaco. I would like to see you show
some facility in determining camera angles and movement, lighting, focus, etc.
Do not deal with sound unless you have some special knowledge or descriptive
talent. You may deal with music lyrics if you think they might apply in a
significant way semiotically. With regard to narrative terms, I would be most
impressed by a sophisticated and appropriate reading of irony in your film, or,
failing that, you could consider doing a plot analysis (though that is not
required) or demonstrate your facility in providing rich *showing detail* with
regard to a frame, shot, scene, or sequence (i.e. imagery) through strong
description. The complete draft of the essay is due at midnight on Tuesday,
November 30. Please write down the word count on the draft.

As you compose your essay, keep in mind the “do
nots” of academic writing about film:

1. Do not write
about the audience of your film AT ALL in your essay.

2. Do not write
about the director of the film. You may mention the director’s full name in
your introduction when you introduce your film and its title.

3. Do not write
about yourself or how the film makes you feel and think about it. Your feelings
and reactions are personal, not analytical.

4. Do not write
about how a film uses narrative/literary vocabulary or semiotic terms. These
terms/concepts are tools for critics like you to read film. They are not used
by filmmakers though filmmakers may be aware of them on some level. To say that
a film uses such terms is to get the story backward. YOU are reading these
terms into the film in order to illuminate it.

5. Do not write a
long summary about the film. Summary must be used as a tool, not a goal.
Writing a long summary indicates you have nothing substantive to say about the
film. Also, we write plot analyses, not plot summaries. In doing so, we
summarize briefly in order to indicate key plot points. However, we do not
allow summarizing to obscure our analyses. This fact we learned in WAM Chapter
1.

6. Do not praise
your film. Do not call it a “masterpiece” or “effective” or otherwise evaluate
the film in a way that might detract from the neutral and more objective
approach of analysis.
