Division of Family and Children Services (DFCS) Summary
Ashlynn called around to a few nursing homes and none were willing to cooperate with her. Ashlynn’s last option was to try DFCS, also known as Division of Family and Children Services.
When she walked into the agency, she received very little help on this task, but there was one lady who wants to remain anonymous, who was willing to help. “Diane,” as I will call her, encouraged me to give her a call and I did just that the next morning. Diane works in the Food Stamps department, helping families and people who cannot or are not able to provide food for themselves.
She sent me an email of the code of ethics policy for the Georgia Department of Human Services, which is the ethical standards that were given to all employees upon being hired at the agency.
Diane’s thoughts on this code of ethics were very interesting. She stated how her teammates refuse to practice confidentiality and they talk and gossip about their clients and teammates. She also mentioned that she witnessed some of her teammates give their family members and friends “the hook-up,” and work on their families’ cases when they are not supposed to do this (stated in the code of ethics).
In the closing, of her mini interview, Diane confessed that she had not read or looked at the code of ethics in a while. Ashlynn made the assumption from Diane’s statement that the code of ethics is not enforced in the work place. Ashlynn appreciated Diane speaking with her and helping her with her ethics project.
There are various issues that can be pointed out in this case. For example, workers should NOT be discussing the client’s cases amongst themselves. They also should not discriminate or decline a client of service by his or her race, looks, or education. Professionals at this agency should be there to help people in need because they cannot receive help elsewhere. There’s many ethical issues identified in this agency that should be fixed or looked into by higher authority. Next, Ashlynn will study and look more into depth of the code of ethics for DFCS. She will also make more detailed notes of the ethical dilemmas that are present within the agency.
