This is a creative, role-playing assignment that asks students to consider the roles of both
patrons and artists. Students have the duration of the course to complete.
Step one:
Imagine that you are a figure from any of the ancient to medieval civilizations we have discussed
(or will discuss). You have the means to commission a work of art. What will it be? Write a
paragraph or two identifying your imagined self and context, and what your commission will be.
Tell me what society you belong to, what gender you are, and what your position is in that
society. Will the work you commission be a painting, a sculpture or perhaps even a work of
architecture? What style will it be? Will it be public or private? Will it be sacred or secular? Will
you enlist the services of a known artist? If so, will it strictly adhere to his or her style or existing
work?
Remember: the goal of this step is two-fold. It should both express your identity (or that of
your imagined self, and express the values of the ancient to medieval society that you come
from. Angles to consider: Design, politics, religion, gender, sexuality, class, etc…what we always
focus on. Think of this as your opportunity to demonstrate what you have learned about this
culture. This should be no more than one page of original writing.
Step two:
Execute the work. I don’t expect anyone to carve any
marble this semester, so think about ways to convey
composition or meaning that you are comfortable with. This
could mean a drawing, a photograph, or even a Lego model.
Whatever medium you choose, just be sure it effectively
illustrates the design that you lay out in step one. Above is
an example of a student who has imagined herself as a
Roman Emperor, and while she did not carve a statue, she
did photograph herself with costume and props, while also
paying careful attention to pose and gesture
