I am currently in the Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner Program (Graduate School-Master Program). I’ve been a registered nurse for 8 years in NY. This is for my Health Policy for Advanced Practice Nursing class. Please strictly follow:

Policy Debate – Final Paper – no more 5 to 6 pages – this total does not include cover page and reference pages.
I. Identify a current health policy issue based on YOUR INTEREST. If appropriate to the topic and in light of the IOM Future of Nursing Reports identify the role of the advanced practice nursing profession and implications of these roles for the new health care system. Conduct a review of the literature to determine the history and current status of the policy issue. Present the prevailing debate including differing perspectives of the policy issue. Based on your review of the relevant research and perspectives, present YOUR position regarding the policy issue, including the rationale and data that informed your decision.
2. A description of the policy issue and your argument for or against the policy will be the specific focus of your paper.
3. Where appropriate please make sure to address how factors of race and culture, gender and sexual orientation, religion, and socio-economic status influence your chosen policy. Consider how issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion would be able to be tacked in your paper.

The issue I would like to address in this paper is scope of practice related to Nurse Practitioners. Here is a brief description of what scope of practice is: scope of practice (SOP) for healthcare professionals, such as nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and advanced practices nurses, is an ongoing and growing area of reform. State legislatures determine the laws and regulations that govern SOP.

Healthcare professional advocates argue that expanding SOP improves access to high quality, affordable care, particularly where there are physician shortages. While key medical associations, such as the American Medical Association, oppose SOP expansion for non-physician healthcare professionals, many states have relaxed restrictions over time to varying degrees.

To extend the capacity of the healthcare workforce to manage COVID-19, many states have temporarily waived SOP restrictions for a wide range of healthcare professionals, including registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, pharmacists, and dentists.

While SOP waivers and expansions were rapidly established to build workforce capacity during the public health emergency, the question of whether any of the policies could be continued beyond the pandemic will be an issue to watch
