First Essay – Turtles All The Way Up
Fittingly there are a hundred versions of this story and probably none are true. It’s always someone wise meeting someone folksy. Here’s a version: William James, father of American Pragmatism, is giving a talk and during the Q and A an audience member, an elderly woman, says she takes issue with his explanation of the order of the universe, explaining that “it’s clear enough to me that the world rests on the back of an enormous turtle.” James, no fool, quickly responds, “can you explain to me dear lady what that turtle is standing on?” “Well, that’s no trouble,” the lady says, “it’s turtles all the way down.”
In logic this problem is known as the problem of infinite regress: you never solve but just keep adding to the confusion. What does the next turtle stand on? A turtle. And that? Turtle. And so on, all the way down…in an infinite regress. Your first essay is the inverse of that: it’s turtles all the way up.

Let me explain.
This essay is as much about learning a way of thinking as it is about making a particular argument on a theme. Actually, it’s more about the way of thinking. I’d say the split is about 80-20 in favor of the way of thinking. I care a lot more about how you make your argument than what your argument is; and I care a lot more about the thinking style you’re able to embody than I do about any particular theme you are focusing on. This doesn’t mean I don’t care or it doesn’t matter, but that you are going to be apt to predominantly consider theme anyway, so I’m steering you toward thinking first: a well-treated theme is an integral part of this, not a substitute.
Thinking styles are hard to pin down and if you’re anxious for me to give you a neat little definition then you’re likely on the wrong track; at the same time, there’s no big mystery here. The thinking style is to use an idea from one place to elevate your thinking about another place, as you spiral both places upward, into another text, where you do it again. Think of it as a YES, AND approach to texts: Here’s a fascinating concept going on in text A (say what it is, and how and why it’s fascinating)…and if we go over to text B this fascinating thing from text A helps us see and articulate something fascinating about text B that we wouldn’t have been able to see or convey had we not seen and thought about text A…and, also, our consideration of text B has us thinking in new ways about text A…even as we move beyond them both to some third and higher thing.
So it’s YES, AND all the way up…
Theme is just a net to help keep things together. Like any good net, it’s mostly open space: so don’t make the theme a fetish that is so constricting you become boring, repetitive, trapped, dull. The net is meant to keep us loosely together, not trapped out of thinking completely. What is Smith’s theme in her essays? What’s Wordworth’s in his poem? What’s Doty’s? What’s Umbrico’s? What’s Goldsmith’s? You see, theme is the easiest and hardest thing to take from a text: it’s easy to point to as a way of not thinking at all—oh, that story is about X; done!—but it’s also incredibly rich if you come to it at the end of real work—wow, I really get what Smith’s saying; it’s hard to communicate but it’s something like XYZ…
So you don’t want to fall into the trap of trying to solve the problem of writing with some ready-made theme. (Remember, the style of thinking is paramount anyway). Better to think in terms of conceptual bundles: stuff that seems to go together, for reasons of you-don’t-yet-know-why. Think of Smith’s sources. What do they have to do with each other? Nothing, except Smith. Nothing except a style of thinking. Same has to hold true for your writing.
Is there a rubric? – I’m constantly emphasizing what you need to do in this essay over the next couple weeks. There are many ways to write an excellent version of this essay. In fact, all excellent essays are unique; all poor essays are poor in the same ways.
So I don’t do rubrics because I can’t allocate X points to Y activity: it’s a whole; the system is synergistic. Certain things need to be happening, and I repeat this stuff a lot in class…it’s largely what the classes leading up to the essay are: a living, breathing, rubric. You have to write your essay your way and all excellent essays contain surprises that can’t be mandated or predicted but whose necessity is clear immediately.
