Computers have changed the way we live our lives, and we are constantly changing our computers and teaching them to do new things. However, it is important for us to question how we should be using computers. With great power comes great responsibility.

Brainstorm ways in which computers have benefited society.

Find a partner and discuss these questions: What are some examples of problems that have been solved because of computers? What are some ways computers have helped you in your life?

When you and your partner are finished, find another pair and share what you talked about. What are some similarities between your group’s ideas? What are some differences?

Problems with Computers

With a new partner, brainstorm some of the problems introduced by computers.

Consider the following questions:

How have computers changed the way we share our personal information with others? Consider services like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. If you post a photo to Instagram, who should be allowed to see it? Should Instagram own the rights to that photo or is it still yours?

We’ve seen how hard it is to write code without bugs. Give an example of a bug you’ve had in your code. Have you experienced any bugs in computer programs that you use? Have you experienced any bugs on the CodeHS website?

Why is it important for programmers to test their code?

Imagine spending a day without using computers of any kind. What would be hard to do? What would be impossible? Do we rely too much on computers?

Assignment

Think about the following scenario and write out some short answers to these questions:

Suppose you’ve written a program that makes cars drive themselves in the safest way possible. Cars that use your program are 100 times less likely to be in an accident than cars with human drivers. Should every car be required to use your program? Should human drivers still be allowed to drive on the roads? If there is an accident, are you responsible? What are some other issues that come with having a world with self driving cars?
