The two articles points out the barbaric acts of human experiments the government of US and some medical research institution conducted on the people of Guatemala. In particular, the government and medical researchers deliberately infected thousands of vulnerable Guatemalans including institutionalized mentally ill patients with sexually transmitted diseases such as gonorrhea and syphilis against their knowledge or consent. Essentially, this action constitutes a gross violation of human rights and implies that human beings are inherently vulnerable to unethical actions of government agencies and large corporations who should ordinarily be entrusted with protection of human welfare. This vulnerability is further propagated through the unwillingness of the judicial system to ensure justice to the victims through courts. The above assertions can be proved based on the following facts. One, the victims were deliberately infected with sexually transmitted diseases without their consent. Two, the government is seemingly unwilling to compensate victims. Three, the actions were covered up to the public.

This Marxist theory is evident in this case of deliberate infection of Guatemalans where the US government (Capitalism) and the large corporations such as Johns Hopkins University (bourgeoisie) seems to use innocent and vulnerable citizens (proletariats) to advance research that would in turn, increase their financial income. The elites here appear to be solely focused on their mission without minding their affairs of poor people used for experiment. Other than current case, similar events had happened before such as Tuskegee syphilis experiments. Therefore, there are possibilities that these things could still happen today.
This week, I was thinking about corporations and how medications for STD’s and STI’s are BIG business. What are your thoughts on these two articles? From a Marxist/conflict perspective, do the elite ”have’s” really care about the lives of the ”have not’s”? Granted, these things happened years ago, but could we think things are still happening today?
