Assessing Congress Today Essay

Assessing Congress Today Essay

For the final assignment, you will write an essay that critically reflects and offers an assessment of the U.S. Congress today. Members of Congress represent citizens of each state and 435 districts, and their decisions have an impact on not only the lives of their constituents, but also on all citizens of the United States and in some cases the world. As an institution, Congress’s public approval ratings have reached historic lows over the past decade, and a growing number of scholars and political analysts contend that the institution has become dysfunctional or even “broken.”

What is your take on this assessment? Unlike most Americans, you have taken an in-depth look at the bicameral Congress and its members, how members represent citizens, and how they make decisions as legislators. As you offer an appraisal of Congress today, be sure to consider strengths and weaknesses, the complex legislative process, the organization of Congress, the individual enterprise, the effects of permanent campaigning, as well as the constitutional foundation for the legislative branch in your essay. Do you think Congress unfairly get a bad rap today, or is the institution failing in its most essential duties? If the latter, what steps can be taken to improve it? Take a position and make your case, based on course material only, and include citations for the evidence you present in support of your position. Do not include any outside sources in your essay, which should be approx. 4-5 pages in length, double-spaced.
