Your assignment is to write a 5-6 page (12 point font, double-spaced) ‘report’ on the findings from your analysis. Please follow the format outlined below.

Use the lectures and course readings to explore the kind of research zooarchaeologists publish and how data is presented in journals. You must find and use at least 5 academic references for the background section and for developing your research question, excluding your textbook. Two can come from course readings, THREE you must find on your own.

Introduction.

A. Give a brief intro to the site.
B. Literature review:
a. A brief overview (a few sentences) onzooarchaeological research, that is why we do zooarchaeology (You can cite course lectures, thetextbook and course readings, but must also useadditional references.)
b. A brief review of zooarchaeological research from similar sites to see how zooarchaeologists have contributed to this area of study.
C. Present your research questions, that is what are we trying determine through this faunal analysis (i.e. foodways, identity, etc.)

Historical and environmental Background

A. Provide a brief history of the site from the sources provided. Where is it? What kind of site is it? What are the main archaeological research objectives for the site? (youwill use the recommended references from your professor)Include a map locating the site.
B. Discuss the locally available fauna (just summarize, you can use the references suggested, and must also talk about domesticated animals as it is a historic site).

Methods

Describe how you did your analysis

This should include:

A. a description of your sample (how many total specimens), the provenience and recovery information (1/8 inch dry screening or flotation)
B. How you identified the fauna (using reference books and comparative collection, to the lowest taxonomic level possible)
C. A description of the data you recorded and how it was recorded (based on the catalogue system/sheets)

Results

What did you find?

Detail the results of your analysis. You should look to other studies to see how these data are presented.

The results must include:

1 ) A brief overview of the results – how many specimens did you identify? %mammal? %fish? % bird? Etc.

2) A description of the taphonomic damage you recorded including

A. Burning
B. Weathering
C. Butchery
D. Any carnivore or rodent damage
