Analyzing Qualitative Data
The essence of a study is to get answers to research questions. To aid the process of answering the questions, the researcher must identify a strategy through which relevant data can be collected. Once the required data is gathered, it is time to organize and analyze the data to squeeze out whatever meaning there is in the data. In this case, the data collection strategy is based on Phenomenological and Case Study design. This is to say that the kind of data which will be collected is qualitative. However, there is a possibility of relying on quantitative data add more meat on the results at the end of the study. The bottom line is that the study must be able to explain the significance of financial intermediaries when it comes to managing the asset portfolios of investors who have interests in companies which are listed on the New York Securities Exchange. Also, the data must help the researcher to alienate the advantages and disadvantages of utilizing financial intermediaries in asset portfolio management. How will the data be organized?
The data which arises from a qualitative research design is oftentimes varied since it comes from varied sources. Data sources could be observation notes, questionnaires, written and recorded interviews, official documents, and/or surveys. Further, the research design relies on feedback from many participants and, as such, it becomes problematic sought out and code the data (Mihas, 2019). Therefore, organizing the data is imperative. This study will first review the collected data in its entirety. The main focus here is to alienate patterns or themes present in the data set. For example, I will group responses on the advantages of financial intermediaries together and assign them under the category “Advantages.” In the second step, I will create a table to facilitate coding of the data. Third, I will group the data based on the code. Lastly, I will group the data according to its relevance to each research question. For example, the data which answers the question on whether investors are better off employing financial intermediaries to manage their asset portfolios will be grouped together. Coding and thematic development
I will use deductive coding too develop the themes from the data. This technique is desirable since there already exists a sufficient body of research in the area of financial analysis and investment which will guide the researcher. Deductive coding is also desirable since this study is not exploratory. Comment by musgr: Why Phenomenological and Case Study design then?
Alternatively, I might use software which makes coding data easy. For example, I will use F4analyse because it easy to use and it is excellent when coding data from interviews (Evers, 2018). Interviews form a critical part of the data collection methods for this study and having a tool which guarantees best results is an added advantage. Triangulation
Data triangulation will be used to establish the validity of the study. In data triangulation, I will conduct in-depth interviews with the investors who have interests in NYSE-listed firms, and the financial intermediaries. I will then compare the insight from the interviews to arrive at the most valid conclusions. The choice of data triangulation is based on ease of use and the ability to utilize insights from varied sources (Ness, 2015). Comment by musgr: Explain how you are going to accomplish this.
Which software applications will be used?
In addition to F4analyse, SPSS will be utilized. SPSS is efficient and gives the researcher a lot of control on what can be done in the analysis process (Hinton & McMurray, 2017).
