Overview
In this project, you’ll be compiling many aspects of veterinary preventative and integrative medicine to produce preventative care guidelines for adult dogs and cats. You can make the guidelines specific to a particular part of the United States (for instance, emphasis on Lyme disease testing and prevention in endemic areas), but you must clearly state what area you used for creating your guidelines. Or, you can make them more general in nature, but you must provide justification for any nonstandard recommendations you make.
Instructions
The scenario: You have just been hired by a veterinary practice that sees mostly dogs and cats. The office manager and chief of staff both realize that the practice is behind the times when it comes to using guidelines to ensure that high-quality care is consistently provided to all patients. They have asked you to design preventative care guidelines for the practice that can be used for both canine and feline patients.
Format the guidelines so it is practical and user-friendly. The guidelines need to be able to be attached to each patient’s record at every wellness exam to guarantee that all important aspects of preventative care have been addressed during the visit.
The guidelines must address the following 10 topics:
Patient history: including lifestyle, life-stage or age, breed, behavior, environmental enrichment, exercise, diet, symptoms, and reproductive status
Physical examination: including BCS, MCS, dental examination, and pain assessment
Diagnostic tests: including minimum database, heartworm testing, fecal examinations, and screening for FELV/FIV in cats
Parasite prevention: including broad spectrum, year-round protection against heartworms, internal and external parasites
Vaccination: including core vaccines and assessment for noncore vaccines
Nutrition: including nutritional assessment/counseling, BCS, MCS, appropriate diets, feeding management, and nutritional risk factors
Reproductive counseling: including spay/neuter
Pet identification: including microchipping
Zoonotic diseases: including relevant client counseling for diseases such as rabies, larval migrans, toxoplasmosis, and salmonellosis
Customized plan and follow-up: including the timing of wellness exams and any additional tests, treatments, and recommendations
It may be helpful to imagine your target audience as a brand-new, first-time dog or cat owner needing general information and guidance on the above topics. Use this opportunity to describe different preventative measures and their importance throughout the pet’s lifespan. You’ll still want to use complete sentences but avoid formatting this as an essay. Clients likely won’t have the time to read through a formal academic paper when learning about their pets. Instead, you may want to include some of these:
