General Comments from professor:
-Summary should not include quoted material from the paper. This should be in your own words.
-Critical review should read like a narrative rather than answers to the questions that were given in the critique group so starting a sentence with yes, the author did a good job… is not what we are looking for here.
-All claims in the review should be supported with examples from the paper. If you think the authors did a good job with something show that with an example from the paper.
-Discussing the author’s credentials for expertise in the field by listing their university affiliations or research interests is inadequate. find additional sources that support expertise.
-Copying the abstract or other sentences from the paper and changing a few words is plagiarism and will be graded as such even if your Turnitin score is low.
-Make sure you understand the paper before writing a review. It was evident that several of you did not understand what you read.
-This assignment is not a summary of the article, rather it is a critical review.

Rubric

-Summary is complete and concise. Enough details to understand the study methods and findings. Minimal extra details not necessary for understanding.

-Complete citation present at the beginning of the paper. Logical flow of ideas following the section headings of the article being critiqued.

Context is established by
– Evaluating the author’s expertise and interest,
– Discussing generalizability, reason for doing the research, prior research in the same field and funding sources,
– Discussing the importance of this research in the field of informatics

Significance is established by
– Research generated new ideas or approaches to a problem
– Other authors validated the research and or cited the work,
– Did this research contribute significantly to the field of informatics?

The evaluation of the introduction addresses:
– Statement of purpose
– Relevance of the title
– Match between the abstract and introductory paragraph
– Sequence of statements leads the reader to the statement of purpose.

The evaluation of the methods addresses:
The validity of the methods to answer the research question.
Can the study be duplicated using the methods listed in the paper?
Flaws in methods including sample size
Clarity of methods section as a whole.
Examples to support conclusions are essential.

The evaluation of the results addresses:
All tables and diagrams for consistency, labeling, & clarity.
Discrepancies between text and tables or diagrams
Text compliments figures rather than repeating the data.

The evaluation of the discussion addresses:
Does the discussion interpret the results or simply restate them?
Does the interpretation support other studies and is it supported by other studies in the field?
Do the authors discuss other work in the field?
Do the authors discuss future directions?
Does the author identify and weaknesses or limitations of the study? Did they address all of them?

Conclusion discusses the overall strengths and weaknesses of the article and its significance in the field of health informatics.
