Lucia loses her brother during the political turmoil in Chile during the early 1970s and is forced to flee the country and live in exile in Canada. Similarly, Evelyn loses both brothers to gang violence and must flee from Guatemala to avoid further retaliation and live as an undocumented refugee in the United States. What are the challenges attached being forced to leave “home,” what qualities does each woman have to help her face her life away from “home,” and how do the challenges of Lucia’s exile compare and/or contrast Evelyn’s challenges as a refugee?
