this fifth formal writing assignment for this course
will give you an opportunity to enter into an

analytical
conversation with two critical academic essays in order to propound a clear and
yet sophisticated and thoughtful thesis that makes a specific claim about
one particular aspect of competitive culture in Arthur Miller’s 1949
play Death of a Salesman. This research paper will expand upon and
explore the implications of the clearly written thesis statement by first
introducing the reader concisely and coherently to the characters and action of
the play, and then analyzing selected relevant portions of the play by quoting,
summarizing and paraphrasing from the play itself as well as at least two
critical academic writings about the play that you will select from our
Brightspace page, located under the tab “Death of a Salesman Critical
Texts.” (You are also welcome to utilize the library database to locate other
critical texts. To ensure that your sources are legit, though, DO NOT Google
academic articles—only locate them vis-à-vis the city colleges library
database).

The organization
of the paper needs to be clear and it should follow the logic implied by the
thesis, and contain both a strong introduction and a strong conclusion.
Finally, a Works Cited page should be included at the end, in proper MLA
citation format. (NOTE: The Works Cited page should merely contain the
bibliographic data of the titles of the articles, NOT the annotations that will
accompany your separate annotated bibliography.)

Here are some topics you might consider (i.e., choose one)
for your narrow, specific, tightly focused thesis statement and subject
outline. (NOTE: Any essay that simply addresses competitive culture as a whole
in Death of a Salesman will be automatically assigned a “D” or “F”
grade—you must arrive at a more specific focus to write a successful 5 page
essay.)
