For your final extended assignment, I ask you to examine three different data tables in reference to three of the institutions we have covered as a class over this third and final segment of the course: education, family and health/healthcare. For each one of the data tables, I ask you to interpret the trends and make a series of sociological points demonstrating your understanding of how individuals of different statuses interact with institutions and the effect on their lives. The following data tables were compiled using the General Social Survey, an attitudinal study of Americans performed every other year since 1972. These specific variables were taken from the 2016 & 2018 datasets. Interpreting data is an important sociological skill, so I ask you to show me you can apply the lessons from quantitative findings and make inferences about society.

This project is worth a significant portion of your grade (20%). It is also the most important assignment, as far as I’m concerned, because it should demonstrate your ability to do the kind of work sociologists do on a regular basis. It should also prove to be an enjoyable read. Make sure that you have sufficiently covered all concepts well. I absolutely cannot stress that enough. Please cover the topics thoroughly and be sure you are referencing sociological concepts.

I expect your paper to contain five sections:

1. An introduction in which you sociologically define the three concepts contained here (education, family and health) and explain why these are important to society and worthy of academic attention.

2. A section interpreting the education example. What are the main findings of this table? What are some sociological reasons why this trend occurs?

3. A section interpreting the family attitudes example. What are the main findings of this table? What are some sociological reasons why this trend occurs?

4. A section interpreting the health example. What are the main findings of this table? What are some sociological reasons why this trend occurs?

5. A final concluding section in which you consider how the institutions of the family, education and health interact with one another. Think of this section as your final opportunity to show me something you have learned!

Remember, you are not simply restating the findings provided to you. I created these tables, and I don’t need you to read them back to me. I am asking you to demonstrate that you can sociologically analyze and interpret data to make some logically consistent and empirically supported conclusions about our society.
