One of my primary reasons for pursing my Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree is to combine my passion for organizational leadership with that for promoting health and wellness through practice and education. The DNP Essentials as outlined by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing [AACN] (2006) emphasize the degree program as equipping the nurse to both advocate for change and lead this change by implementing evidence-based research into practice environments to produce quality outcomes. By utilizing resources and skills in areas ranging from policy to technology, DNP-prepared nurses are essentially change agents at the forefront of healthcare. To address an organization’s needs by way of filling a gap in practice or implementing a practice change essentially means to produce not only solutions, but the tools with which the quality and success of those solutions can be measured and evaluated so that they can be sustainable. The Doctorate of Philosophy in nursing focuses on asking questions concerning existing practice problems and trends in outcomes and then answering by way of conducting quality research to reach conclusions and make recommendations. The Doctorate of Nursing Practice focuses on asking questions to address practice problems and answering with tools and strategies produced from the aforementioned research.
When considering the PhD route, I knew that my passion for impacting organizational culture through leadership and communication made the DNP a better fit. While I value research, I recognize that my strengths are in the areas of leading people, building teams and strategies, and designing tools for more effective communication. This is also what led me to go beyond the MSN pathway and pursue the BSN-entry DNP option. I knew that I would desire to have the opportunities to lead based on qualifications rendered by the DNP. When I reviewed the expected outcomes of the program and the content of the courses, I felt a sense of excitement to become informed at this level. My expectation is to go beyond research and clinical practice and to become more involved with advocacy, policy-making, and program design within clinical settings and university settings.
At the doctorate level, there is additional emphasis not only on assessment and differential diagnosis, but on evaluation before and after implementation of interventions at the patient-care level and organizational level. Nurse leadership that bridges across specialties is at the core of the doctoral program and the foundation is based in both natural and social sciences (AACN, 2006). Beeber et al. (2019) discuss the lack of universal understanding and novelty surrounding the value of the DNP role in clinical, non-academic settings. I believe that the value of the DNP role will become more clear and sought after as DNP graduates pursue and create roles which they were made to fill. I am encouraged by the recent influx of entrepreneurial-minded nurses set on blazing their own trails with innovative solutions to practice problems they’ve observed in traditional clinical settings and amongst community populations. As Tussing et al. (2018) express, DNP graduates are increasing in number as are the projects incorporating interdisciplinary teams, innovative delivery models, and increased community engagement.

NURS 8002 Discussion Why the DNP and Future Goals

Addressing stakeholder needs requires not only someone who is skilled at providing answers, but one who is capable of first assessing the true nature and root of the problems. I believe that a true leader requires the ability to observe, relate, and communicate with the stakeholders involved in order to better assess their position, values, and interests. I hope to be such a leader in the community and university settings by evaluating and improving existing programs while designing new programs to meet the needs of nursing students and the professional nursing community. I believe that by creating environments where nurses can feel empowered, and by incorporating this mindset into their curriculum, their growth and advancement in practice will benefit their patients. While I understand that the practicum experiences can not involve nursing students, I believe that by observing the current professional nursing community I can gain insight into some of the issues that may be rooted in nursing education.
While I am still pursuing practicum sites, one organization I am interested in working with both as a nurse and eventually as a DNP-prepared nurse practitioner, is a newly developed non-profit formed by a fellow colleague who has obtained her DNP and seeks to bring effective change to the teenage population through education and case management from a virtual platform. Much of the concern around teenagers and sexual health, especially, stems from misinformation and the rate at which it spreads. With my background in women’s health and maternal-child care, and my interest in community health, I believe that I could serve this organization well and advocate for its continued support while playing an integral role in its design from the ground up. I enjoy interdisciplinary teamwork and feel that being well-connected in my community would provide a source of healthcare providers who are innovative in thinking and not far removed from the target population at hand. From my own personal observations, the role of the DNP is less about title, as some may imply, and more about impact.
I have previously been involved with implementing practice change within an organization through an internship in which we evaluated the correlation between school ratings and opportunities for building social capital through engagement amongst the school’s students and staff. From our needs assessment and research we were able to make recommendations to schools with lower ratings concerning areas they could improve upon relating to the level of connectedness students felt to the school and its resources. I enjoyed the field work of this role and knowing that our recommendations could change the experience youth had throughout their high school years. As a DNP-prepared nurse, I would hope to have the opportunity to witness the outcomes firsthand.
