Writing a paper on Marble portrait of the emperor Augustus

The paper must be in your own words. I will not accept merely a quotation of the museum
label or of the catalogue entry. That is plagiarism. You may, however refer to catalogue
entries or other bibliographic sources if you wish, but then you need to quote or paraphrase them,
cite them in a footnote, and provide a bibliography.
Pick one of the images on exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, located at 82″ St. and 5
Ave. in Manhattan that are listed in this assignment. The images are also available online at the
links listed below so you don’t have to visit the museum in person if you prefer not going there
during the pandemic. Based on what you have learned both in class and from the textbook about
the Egyptian, Ancient Near Eastern, Aegean, Greek, and Roman periods, discuss the purpose and
patron of the work if known, the iconography (subject matter, meaning, and symbolism), its
composition and style, and note whether it was influenced by art from another period or society
or vice versa and whether it was innovative in any way. Some of the images can be compared to
similar images we have discussed in class. Don’t hesitate to include your personal observations
about the work of art, such as composition, colors, modeling of muscles and bones, depiction of
the eyes, etc.
Please also discuss the following:
How did the culture, society, or religion of the people that produced this work of art
influence it?
Is any of the symbolism specific to that culture?
Did the history of the place in which the work of art was created have an impact on the
style, the iconography, the influences on the image, and its innovations (if applicable)?
You should also consider the concept of cultural bias in your discussion of the work of art:
What does this work of art teach you about a society that is different from our own?
Does the work of art refer to religious concepts, social norms, gender roles, or even
symbols with which you were not formerly familiar?
