I think students learn to be critical readers when they see examples of other students writing. When I have students read essays other students wrote from my past classes they are the most vocal about poorly written essays. When students see bad writing, they know it. They say: “This essay has no flow!” “This is a bad essay!” “I had to read that sentence 4 times.” “How are you an English teacher?” When they see good writing, they are vocal, but nobody shouts the answers out. These essays are examples of good and bad narrative essays.

With good writing, the work that the writer put into their essay or article often is invisible. Poor writing, the flaws are often clear and we can see them. But good writing, few people realize it is good, they just understand it well.

****Do not complete this until you’ve read “Toulmin Model Directions” and “Rubric for Toulmin Essay” to get an idea of what is required on this essay.

I’ve given you 4 Toulmin model essays from various students. These essays are not perfect, but all of these essays are good. Please use the rubric to point out the problems with two of four essays.

2. Your job is to grade TWO of these Toulmin essays using the rubric. Give them a grade on a scale from 1-100. Explain (minimum of 200 words) what they are doing right and/or what they need to improve on.

Write 200 words for two different essays, which should be a total of 400 words of analysis written. It is up to you which ones you want to grade. Be detailed on what the author’s strengths and weaknesses are.
