Directions: You will familiarize yourself with the essays in chapter 19 of TSIS for this paper. Please note, there are eight essays from this chapter. You don’t necessarily have to read all eight of them (though you will need to closely read two of them). Your job is to find a connection and an area of disagreement between two of these essays. Once you explain what this area of disagreement is, you will then develop your own opinion on the topic. You have tremendous freedom in what you want to write about, so please embrace this. It’s also important to use the templates found throughout the book. These templates will improve your stylistic competency.
Introduction (2 points)
Introduce the reader to the controversial issue that is the subject of the paper.
Shoot for 7-10 sentences, depending on the complexity of sentence structure.
Make a connection between the texts, and after doing so, assert your opinion: This is your thesis.
Summary (2.5 points)
Your topic sentence must make a connection between the texts.
Contextualize the summary of two competing essays.
Remain objective: Don’t reveal your opinions or which side you are on.
Present the gist of each author’s argument. It must be clear what the debate is and how these two authors oppose each other.
Response (4.5 points)
Now you should state your opinion on the matter. This is your thesis.
Prove your thesis, while using the texts to support your thesis.
Take issue with the counterpoint, while addressing the relevant text.
Conclusion (1 points)
Rephrase the competing arguments and emphasize your thesis statement.
Templates (3 points)
Your textbook provides many templates to help a writer make their point. They are littered throughout your book, and a comprehensive list of them can be found beginning on page 759.
You will use at least FOUR of these templates in your essay.
At the end of your paper, simply center the phrase TEMPLATES USED IN THIS PAPER. List the four templates below this phrase AND state where I can find them.

Make sure you are citing the authors of each essay. Look at the beginning of the essay to see who the author is.
Attach a Works Cited (if using MLA) or References (if using APA) page.
